The Senate Committee on Finance arrived at the Stewart Conservation Camp at approximately 8:15 a.m. A tour of the camp was conducted by Brenda Burns, Warden, Northern Nevada Correctional Center. At the conclusion of the tour of this facility, the committee heard testimony regarding the need for the proposed construction of Capital Improvement Project 93-C6, which requests the replacement of a 230-bed facility at the Stewart Conservation Camp using the Tonopah, Nevada, prototype. Estimated cost of the new camp, which would be funded from General Obligation Bonds, is $4,658,256.
The committee then departed for the new regional medical facility which is under construction and is adjacent to the Northern Nevada Correctional Facility. The 112-bed facility was approved by the 1991 legislature and is anticipated to begin operation sometime in September, 1993. Warden Burns and George Kaiser, M.D., Medical Director, Department of Prisons, led the committee on a tour of the facility indicating the types and numbers of clients to be housed in the various wings of the $12 million complex.
Warden Burns then led the committee on a tour of Unit 7 at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center which is modeled after the units at the Lovelock, Nevada, medium-security facility. After walking through the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, the committee departed the prison at approximately 9:50 a.m.
Senator Jacobsen led the committee on a driving tour of the state complex located at Stewart and pointed out the various agencies that are currently housed within this complex. Senator Jacobsen
also drew the committee's attention to the buildings that have
recently been brought into operation and showed them a number of buildings that would require extensive repair prior to utilization.
