REMARKS FROM THE FLOOR

Jan Thomas, Secretary of the Senate, brought a matter of great importance to the Senators which is detailed in a memorandum from Linda Alden, Chief Clerk of the Assembly:

To: Jan Thomas, Secretary of the Senate
From: Linda Alden, Chief Clerk of the Assembly
Date: March 25, 1997

Jan:

I thought it best to alert you to a problem in the building. Despite all of our cautions and tight security, yesterday a certain item (Senate/Assembly softball trophy) was "liberated" from my office without my knowledge or consent. I think we should closely guard all of our belongings and perhaps even our first born, as there is obviously a thief running amuck. I don't believe anything is safe or sacred at this point.
I have filed a report with the Legislative Police and they are going to dust my office for fingerprints and conduct in-depth interrogations!
I wanted you to know this since I came to work this morning at 7:30 a.m. and found the door to your office wide open. "There was a light on but no one was home."
I have alerted the full Assembly regarding the theft. I would advise that you put the full Senate on alert also. I will keep you advised of our findings.
Senator Raggio requested that his remarks be entered in the Journal.
Thank you, Mr. President. I think it is certainly appropriate that we received this message from the Assembly concerning their loss. They did not specify the item, but I know we want to assist in any way that we can to rectify the situation. I suggest we send a memorandum back to the Chief Clerk expressing our regrets. I would further offer the services of my cousin Nunzio who is visiting from Chicago and is willing to help them in their endeavor.

On request of Senator Rhoads, the privilege of the floor of the Senate Chamber for this day was extended to Mike Dayton, Chief of Staff for Representative Gibbons.
