Chairman James called the meeting to order to consider the authorization of a committee bill draft request.
Senator Dean A. Rhoads, Northern Nevada Senatorial District, explained that he was contacted by a municipal judge in West Wendover. This judge indicated his term of office is only 1 year, so he must seek reelection every year. A longer term of office may be fixed through a city’s charter. The judge asked Senator Rhoads for legislation to allow cities incorporated under general law, like the City of West Wendover, to set the term of office for its municipal judges by ordinance. The proposal is outlined in Exhibit A.
The committee agreed to sponsor the drafting of the legislation as described.
SENATOR MCGINNESS MOVED TO AUTHORIZE THE BILL DRAFT REQUEST TO ALLOW A CITY INCORPORATED UNDER GENERAL LAW TO SET THE TERM OF OFFICE FOR ITS MUNICIPAL JUDGES BY ORDINANCE. (S.B. 314)
SENATOR CARE SECONDED THE MOTION.
THE MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
There being no further business before the committee, Chairman James adjourned the meeting at 11:43 a.m.
