AN ACT relating to education; revising provisions governing patriotic observance in public schools; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

1-1 Section 1. NRS 389.040 is hereby amended to read as follows:

1-2 389.040 [There shall be at least 1 hour set aside each school week in

1-3 all graded schools and high schools] Each public school in the State of

1-4 Nevada [for the purpose of holding patriotic exercises.] shall set aside

1-5 appropriate time at the beginning of each school day for patriotic

1-6 observance. A public school shall determine the manner in which it will

1-7 satisfy the requirement of this section, including, without limitation,

1-8 setting aside time for pupils to pledge their allegiance to the flag of the

1-9 United States. If a pupil objects for any reason or belief to the manner

1-10 chosen by the school, the school shall cooperate with the pupil to

1-11 determine a reasonable alternative activity for the pupil during that time.

1-12 Sec. 2. This act becomes effective on July 1, 1999.
