AN ACT relating to education; creating a trust fund for geographic education; making an appropriation; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

1-1 Section 1. Chapter 396 of NRS is hereby amended by adding thereto

1-2 a new section to read as follows:

1-3 1. The fund for geographic education is hereby created as a trust

1-4 fund. The interest and income earned on the money in the trust fund

1-5 must be credited to the fund.

1-6 2. The state treasurer shall pay to the dean of the College of

1-7 Education at the University of Nevada, Reno, at the end of each quarter

1-8 an amount equal to any interest and income credited to the trust fund

1-9 during that quarter. The dean shall, in cooperation with the Geographic

1-10 Alliance in Nevada or its successor, use the money to pay expenses which

1-11 relate to the education of public school teachers in the State of Nevada in

1-12 the field of geography.

1-13 3. The state board of examiners may, upon making a determination

1-14 that any portion of the principal of the money in the trust fund is

1-15 necessary to meet existing or future obligations of the state, recommend

1-16 to the interim finance committee that the amount so needed be

1-17 transferred from the trust fund to the state general fund. Upon approval

1-18 of the interim finance committee, the money may be so transferred.

2-1 4. The dean shall submit an itemized statement of all of the income

2-2 and expenditures from the trust fund each year to the legislature or the

2-3 interim finance committee.

2-4 Sec. 2. 1. There is hereby appropriated from the state general fund

2-5 to the trust fund for geographic education created by section 1 of this act,

2-6 the sum of $500,000.

2-7 2. The College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno, may

2-8 use the money transferred pursuant to subsection 2 of section 1 of this act

2-9 only if matching money is provided in full by the National Geographic

2-10 Society Foundation or from sources other than the appropriation made by

2-11 subsection 1 on or before June 30, 2001.

2-12 3. If matching money is not provided in full on or before June 30,

2-13 2001, the money appropriated by subsection 1 reverts to the state general

2-14 fund on that date.

2-15 Sec. 3. This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
