AN ACT relating to school personnel; removing the requirement that a superintendent of schools of a school district be licensed as a school administrator; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

1-1 Section 1. NRS 391.110 is hereby amended to read as follows:

1-2 391.110 1. The board of trustees of a school district may:

1-3 (a) Employ any person [licensed for the position of administrator] whom

1-4 the board of trustees determines is qualified to serve as the superintendent

1-5 of schools of the school district. The commission may require the

1-6 superintendent of any school district to hold a master’s degree.

1-7 (b) Define his powers and fix his duties.

1-8 (c) Fix his salary.

1-9 2. If the board of trustees of a school district employs a person who is

1-10 not licensed as an administrator to serve as the superintendent of

1-11 schools, the board of trustees shall employ a person who is licensed as an

1-12 administrator to oversee the academic programs of the public schools

1-13 within the school district.

1-14 3. A superintendent of schools may be employed for an initial term not

1-15 to exceed 4 years. The term of any subsequent employment may be of any

1-16 duration.

1-17 [3.] 4. A superintendent of schools may be dismissed at any time for

1-18 cause.

2-1 [4.] 5. A superintendent of schools may administer oaths or

2-2 affirmations relating to public schools.

2-3 Sec. 2. This act becomes effective on July 1, 1999.
