ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing former Assemblyman Louis

W. Bergevin.

1-1 Whereas, Nevadans were deeply grieved to learn of the death of Louis

1-2 W. Bergevin on February 19, 1998; and

1-3 Whereas, Lou Bergevin was born on June 22, 1922, in the old brick

1-4 hospital on Main Street in Gardnerville and remained a life-long Douglas

1-5 County resident; and

1-6 Whereas, After attending Gardnerville Grammar School and Douglas

1-7 County High School, Lou Bergevin studied mechanical engineering at the

1-8 University of Nevada, Reno; and

1-9 Whereas, Lou Bergevin served in the United States Army Air Force

1-10 ordnance department for 6 years from 1941 to 1946 and was overseas for 3

1-11 1/2 years; and

2-1 Whereas, During his esteemed career in public service, Lou Bergevin

2-2 served as a member and past President of the Douglas County School

2-3 Board, as a member of the Nevada State Board of Education for 11 years

2-4 presiding as President from 1961 to 1970 and as a member of the Nevada

2-5 Tax Commission from 1970 to 1974; and

2-6 Whereas, Lou Bergevin received the Cattleman of the Year award in

2-7 1971 and was President of the Nevada Cattleman’s Association from 1978

2-8 to 1979; and

2-9 Whereas, Lou Bergevin served for 14 years as an Assemblyman from

2-10 1979 to 1992, participating in seven regular and three special sessions; and

2-11 Whereas, During his tenure as an Assemblyman, Lou Bergevin was a

2-12 member of the Taxation Committee, Chairman of the Committee on

2-13 Government Affairs in 1985, Chairman of the Legislative Commission in

2-14 1985 and 1986, served as Minority Floor Leader for the 1987 and 1989

2-15 legislative sessions and Minority Whip for the 1991 legislative session; and

2-16 Whereas, While serving the State of Nevada as an Assemblyman, Lou

2-17 Bergevin wrote and helped develop tax measures that protected veterans

2-18 and senior citizens and urged the passage of a law that required residential

2-19 construction taxes to be used in the neighborhoods where they were

2-20 collected; and

2-21 Whereas, After his years as an Assemblyman, Lou Bergevin and his

2-22 wife, Luetta Dressler Bergevin, worked together managing the Fred

2-23 Dressler Ranch, one of Nevada’s largest ranching operations owned by the

2-24 Dressler family; and

2-25 Whereas, Assemblyman Lou Bergevin is survived by his wife, Luetta,

2-26 son, Lee Bergevin of Sparks, daughter, Jeanne Russell of Carson City,

2-27 sister, Lillian, five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and several

2-28 nieces and nephews; now, therefore, be it

2-29 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-30 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-31 Legislature offer their sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the

2-32 family and friends of Louis W. Bergevin; and be it further

2-33 Resolved, That Lou Bergevin will long be remembered by his friends

2-34 in the Nevada Legislature for his wisdom and leadership ability as he

2-35 helped guide this legislative body through major changes in the Nevada tax

2-36 system; and be it further

2-37 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-38 copy of this resolution to Lou Bergevin’s beloved wife, Luetta, and to his

2-39 children, Lee Bergevin and Jeanne Russell.
