ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONUrging the University and Community

College System of Nevada to increase efforts to develop course offerings, academic programs

and student activities for students from all racial and ethnic backgrounds.

1-1 Whereas, One of the goals of the University and Community College

1-2 System of Nevada is to improve the access to and quality of educational

1-3 opportunities for Nevada’s students; and

1-4 Whereas, A quality experience in higher education must include an

1-5 opportunity for all students to learn about the economic, political and social

1-6 contributions made by all the ethnic groups in our society; and

1-7 Whereas, Because of the wide range of ethnic diversity of the students

1-8 who attend the universities and community colleges in this state, these

1-9 institutions must adjust their curriculum and approach to teaching to better

1-10 provide these students with a curriculum that is more ethnically and

1-11 culturally diverse; and

1-12 Whereas, The ever-changing ethnic and racial composition of student

1-13 enrollment in the universities and community colleges in this state has

1-14 focused attention on the lack of funding and staff allocated to organizations

1-15 specific to racial and ethnic groups, the need for an ethnically diverse group

1-16 of counselors to work in student support programs, the lack of on-campus

1-17 activities for students of color and the lack of courses relevant to specific

1-18 ethnic and racial groups; and

2-1 Whereas, The students who attend the universities and community

2-2 colleges in this state would benefit from an increase in course offerings,

2-3 academic programs and student activities relevant to students of color; now,

2-4 therefore, be it

2-5 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-6 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-7 Legislature do hereby urge the University and Community College System

2-8 of Nevada to increase efforts to develop course offerings, academic

2-9 programs and student activities available at its institutions that better reflect

2-10 the cultural diversity of the student body and local communities; and be it

2-11 further

2-12 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-13 copy of this resolution to the Chairman of the Board of Regents of the

2-14 University of Nevada.
