ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONDesignating March 23, 1999, as Nevada

Diabetes Awareness Day.

1-1 Whereas, Diabetes is a common, serious and costly disease that poses

1-2 a major health problem to the residents of the State of Nevada; and

1-3 Whereas, It is estimated that the population of this state will double in

1-4 the next 20 years and much of the current and future economic burden of

1-5 diabetes can be averted through increased awareness about the disease and

1-6 known preventative measures; and

1-7 Whereas, In 1994, for diabetes patients in this state, the direct cost of

1-8 medical care and the indirect cost of lost productivity and premature

1-9 mortality totaled a staggering $567 million; and

1-10 Whereas, The State of Nevada is helping to fight this disease through

1-11 the Nevada Diabetes Council which is the advisory board to the Nevada

2-1 State Diabetes Control Program established in 1996 by the Center for

2-2 Disease Control; and

2-3 Whereas, For the first time ever, opportunity exists to create positive

2-4 programs through collaborative efforts to reduce the cost and incidence of

2-5 this debilitating illness; now, therefore, be it

2-6 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-7 Concurring, That March 23, 1999, is hereby designated as Nevada

2-8 Diabetes Awareness Day; and be it further

2-9 Resolved, That the Nevada Legislature hereby commends the Nevada

2-10 Diabetes Council for the informative services that it provides to the

2-11 residents of the State of Nevada relating to diabetes; and be it further

2-12 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-13 copy of this resolution to Mylan Hawkins, Executive Director of the

2-14 Nevada Diabetes Association for Children and Adults and David Govaker,

2-15 M.D., Chairman of the Nevada Diabetes Council.
