ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing the former Chief Clerk of the

Nevada Assembly, Linda B. Alden.

1-1 Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature and the Legislative

1-2 Counsel Bureau were deeply saddened with the untimely passing of Linda

1-3 B. Alden on October 10, 1998; and

1-4 Whereas, Linda was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, on January 1, 1945,

1-5 to Mark and Hariett McManus; and

1-6 Whereas, After graduation from Sheridan High School in 1963, Linda

1-7 attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming; and

1-8 Whereas, In 1964, Linda returned to Sheridan and began working for

1-9 the County Assessor’s Office which was the beginning of her career in

1-10 public service; and

2-1 Whereas, Many persons in this legislative body first met Linda during

2-2 the 1983 legislative session when she was hired by the Assembly as

2-3 Secretary to Speaker John Vergiels; and

2-4 Whereas, During that session, Linda impressed everyone with her

2-5 professional demeanor and outstanding work ethic and was offered and

2-6 accepted the position as Administrative Assistant to Chief Clerk Mouryne

2-7 Landing and Secretary of the Senate Janice Thomas; and

2-8 Whereas, Linda continued to work for the Nevada Legislature and the

2-9 Legislative Counsel Bureau in various capacities including Minute Clerk

2-10 and Journal Clerk for the Senate Front Desk, and Receptionist and Lobbyist

2-11 Registration Clerk for the Legislative Counsel Bureau; and

2-12 Whereas, Because of her excellent organizational skills, Linda was

2-13 recruited to assist in the coordination of the annual meeting of the National

2-14 Conference of State Legislatures that was hosted by Nevada in Reno in

2-15 1988; and

2-16 Whereas, Linda later moved to Denver, Colorado, where she worked

2-17 for the National Conference of State Legislatures for the record-breaking

2-18 period of 1 week, when she was reunited with her high school sweetheart

2-19 and moved from Denver to join him in Wyoming, thus leading to a

2-20 cherished moment in Linda’s life, her marriage to Bruce Alden on

2-21 December 12, 1990; and

2-22 Whereas, After their marriage, Linda and Bruce lived together in

2-23 Wyoming for a short while before returning to Carson City in December

2-24 1992, when Linda became the Assembly Journal Clerk, a position she held

2-25 during the 1993 and 1995 legislative sessions; and

2-35 upon learning that her son, Richie Ruff, had been killed on May 27, 1996,

2-36 by a drunk driver; and

2-37 Whereas, During the 1997 legislative session, Linda focused all of her

3-2 Mouryne Dini, whose caring support was invaluable in helping Linda to

3-3 attain her professional goals and, more importantly, to face the personal

3-4 challenges in her life; and

3-5 Whereas, Of the many ways that Linda exhibited her natural wit and

3-6 true spirit, the finest example, not evident to the general public, was that

3-7 she often wore Mickey Mouse slippers while conducting business in the

3-8 Assembly Chambers; and

3-9 Whereas, With all of this said and done, the quintessential memory that

3-10 will be forever etched in the annuls of legislative history is that in the

3-11 Assembly Chambers, on the occasion of Speaker Dini’s 68th birthday in

3-12 1997, Linda B. Alden successfully transformed her front desk staff and the

3-13 Sergeant at Arms’ staff into Macarena dancers, led by none other than, the

3-14 former Chief Clerk, Mouryne Landing Dini; and

3-15 Whereas, On October 10, 1998, Linda lost her courageous battle with

3-16 this deadly disease after years of fighting and, with her passing, Nevada lost

3-17 a friend whose bright smile and warm personality will forever be missed by

3-18 the members of this Legislature; and

3-29 with dignity and courage; and be it further
