ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing former Speaker of the

Assembly, Berkeley L. Bunker.

1-1 Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature note with profound

1-2 sorrow the passing of native Nevadan and former Assemblyman Berkeley

1-3 L. Bunker on January 21, 1999; and

1-4 Whereas, The story of this native Nevadan began on August 12, 1906,

1-5 on a farm in the Moapa Valley hamlet of St. Thomas, where Berkeley

1-6 Bunker was born one of the 10 children of Martin and Helen Bunker,

1-7 pioneers who settled in St. Thomas in 1877; and

1-8 Whereas, In the 1920s, the Bunker family relocated to Las Vegas, a

1-9 railroad town with a population of just a few thousand whose future excited

1-10 Berkeley Bunker as he envisioned the possibilities which he would spend

1-11 most of his life helping to make reality; and

2-1 Whereas, After graduation from Las Vegas High School and time

2-2 spent as a missionary for his church, Berkeley Bunker married his high

2-3 school sweetheart, Lucille Whitehead, who was his partner for the next 55

2-4 years until her death in 1988; and

2-5 Whereas, Berkeley Bunker later married Della Lee, a long-time friend

2-6 and native of Panaca; and

2-7 Whereas, Berkeley Bunker was elected to the Nevada Assembly in

2-8 1936, 1938 and 1940, serving as Speaker of the Assembly during his

2-9 second term and also as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee; and

2-10 Whereas, Before serving his third term as Assemblyman, Berkeley

2-11 Bunker was appointed by Governor E. P. Carville to complete the term of

2-12 United States Senator Key Pittman; and

2-13 Whereas, In 1944, Berkeley Bunker won the only Nevada seat in the

2-14 United States House of Representatives; and

2-15 Whereas, After his career in politics, Berkeley Bunker, who did not

2-16 believe in retirement, continued as co-owner of Bunker Brothers Mortuary

2-17 and then as a bankruptcy trustee; and

2-18 Whereas, Berkeley Bunker’s commitment to the community is

2-19 evidenced by his membership and service in numerous organizations such

2-20 as the Kiwanas Club, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America, American Red

2-21 Cross and American Cancer Society, as well as being past President of the

2-22 Las Vegas YMCA and national President of the Order of the Golden Rule;

2-23 and

2-24 Whereas, Berkeley Bunker is survived by his beloved wife Della, his

2-25 daughters, Loretta Derrick and Ann Harris, his stepson, Dr. James Lee

2-26 Richards, his stepdaughter, Sharla Humphrey, his sister, Ann Shipley, as

2-27 well as 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

2-28 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-29 Concurring, That the members of the 70th Session of the Nevada

2-30 Legislature express their heartfelt sympathy and sincere condolences to the

2-31 family and friends of former Assemblyman Berkeley Bunker; and be it

2-32 further

2-33 Resolved, That Berkeley Bunker will long be remembered with the

2-34 highest regard for his integrity, sense of humor and positive outlook as well

2-35 as the rich legacy of his service to the community of Las Vegas and to the

2-36 State of Nevada; and be it further

2-37 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-38 copy of this resolution to Berkeley Bunker’s family.
