ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONDesignating April 28, 1999, as Workers’

Memorial Day in the State of Nevada.

1-1 Whereas, Since 1989, April 28 has been observed as Workers’

1-2 Memorial Day by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of

1-3 Industrial Organizations; and

1-4 Whereas, Workers’ Memorial Day is not only a time to remember the

1-5 workers who have succumbed to an occupational disease or been injured or

1-6 killed on the job, but a time to renew the commitment to prevent these

1-7 tragedies in the future; and

1-8 Whereas, This date is significant in that it is the anniversary of the

1-9 enactment of the Occupational Safety and Health Act; and

2-1 Whereas, Every year millions of workers, or approximately one worker

2-2 every 5 seconds, become a casualty of an occupational disease or are

2-3 injured or killed on the job; and

2-4 Whereas, Too often these tragedies and the devastation they cause for

2-5 these workers, their families and co-workers are quickly forgotten; now,

2-6 therefore, be it

2-7 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-8 Concurring, That the 70th session of the Nevada Legislature hereby

2-9 designates April 28, 1999, as Workers’ Memorial Day, a day to honor and

2-10 remember the workers who have succumbed to an occupational disease or

2-11 been injured or killed as a result of work-related accidents; and be it further

2-12 Resolved, That the residents of the State of Nevada are hereby urged to

2-13 observe this day by recognizing the need for strengthening safety and health

2-14 protections in the workplace so that future tragedies can be prevented.
