ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONCommemorating the 150th anniversary of

the first discovery of gold in Nevada and proclaiming July 17 and 18, 1999, as the Nevada

Gold Sesquicentennial Celebration.

1-1 Whereas, The chance discovery of a few shiny metal flakes on a warm

1-2 summer’s day in July of the year 1849, at the mouth of a remote canyon in

1-3 what is present-day Nevada, played a significant role in changing the

1-4 course of the history of the American West, founded the mining industries

1-5 of Nevada and contributed the economic impetus that spurred the formation

1-6 of the State of Nevada; and

1-7 Whereas, The site of that discovery of placer gold is the site of the

1-8 present-day Town of Dayton, County of Lyon, the first permanent non

2-1 Indian settlement in Nevada, the linear successor to Hall’s Station,

2-2 McMarlin’s Station, Chinatown, Mineral Rapids and Nevada City; and

2-3 Whereas, The Town of Dayton was the original seat of the County of

2-4 Lyon from 1861 to 1911; and

2-5 Whereas, The discovery of placer gold nuggets and the subsequent

2-6 exploration of the arroyo now known as Gold Canyon led prospectors to

2-7 the location of the hard-rock claim called, thereafter, the Comstock Lode;

2-8 and

2-9 Whereas, Wealth recovered from the aforesaid Comstock Lode helped

2-10 support the efforts of the Union in the War Between the States; and

2-11 Whereas, The many technical and engineering advances of the

2-12 Comstock era and the wealth recovered from the Comstock Lode forever

2-13 changed the course of the mining industry world-wide, and the expansion

2-14 and settlement of the western United States; and

2-15 Whereas, The 150th Anniversary of the first discovery of gold in

2-16 Nevada has come to hand and the residents of the Town of Dayton have

2-17 come forth to petition recognition of this momentous event and invite all to

2-18 participate in a grand celebration; now, therefore, be it

2-19 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-20 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-21 Legislature do hereby declare that in the County of Lyon, State of Nevada,

2-22 United States of America, the 17th and 18th days of the month of July in

2-23 the year 1999 are officially proclaimed as the Nevada Gold

2-24 Sesquicentennial Celebration; and be it further

2-25 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-26 copy of this resolution to the Chairman of the Lyon County Commission,

2-27 the Chairman of the Nevada Gold Sesquicentennial Committee and the

2-28 President of the Dayton Historic Society.
