ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTION—Commemorating the 150th anniversary of
the first discovery of gold in Nevada and proclaiming July 17 and 18, 1999, as the Nevada
Gold Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Whereas, The chance discovery of a few shiny metal flakes on a warm1-2
summer’s day in July of the year 1849, at the mouth of a remote canyon in1-3
what is present-day Nevada, played a significant role in changing the1-4
course of the history of the American West, founded the mining industries1-5
of Nevada and contributed the economic impetus that spurred the formation1-6
of the State of Nevada; and1-7
Whereas, The site of that discovery of placer gold is the site of the1-8
present-day Town of Dayton, County of Lyon, the first permanent non2-1
Indian settlement in Nevada, the linear successor to Hall’s Station,2-2
McMarlin’s Station, Chinatown, Mineral Rapids and Nevada City; and2-3
Whereas, The Town of Dayton was the original seat of the County of2-4
Lyon from 1861 to 1911; and2-5
Whereas, The discovery of placer gold nuggets and the subsequent2-6
exploration of the arroyo now known as Gold Canyon led prospectors to2-7
the location of the hard-rock claim called, thereafter, the Comstock Lode;2-8
and2-9
Whereas, Wealth recovered from the aforesaid Comstock Lode helped2-10
support the efforts of the Union in the War Between the States; and2-11
Whereas, The many technical and engineering advances of the2-12
Comstock era and the wealth recovered from the Comstock Lode forever2-13
changed the course of the mining industry world-wide, and the expansion2-14
and settlement of the western United States; and2-15
Whereas, The 150th Anniversary of the first discovery of gold in2-16
Nevada has come to hand and the residents of the Town of Dayton have2-17
come forth to petition recognition of this momentous event and invite all to2-18
participate in a grand celebration; now, therefore, be it2-19
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate2-20
Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada2-21
Legislature do hereby declare that in the County of Lyon, State of Nevada,2-22
United States of America, the 17th and 18th days of the month of July in2-23
the year 1999 are officially proclaimed as the Nevada Gold2-24
Sesquicentennial Celebration; and be it further2-25
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a2-26
copy of this resolution to the Chairman of the Lyon County Commission,2-27
the Chairman of the Nevada Gold Sesquicentennial Committee and the2-28
President of the Dayton Historic Society.~
