ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing former Assemblyman R.

Guild Gray.

1-1 Whereas, On March 23, 1998, the residents of the State of Nevada

1-2 were saddened by the passing of poet, historian, educator and former

1-3 Assemblyman R. Guild Gray; and

1-4 Whereas, R. Guild Gray was born in Peoria, Illinois, on September 2,

1-5 1911, and grew up near Reno where his parents settled in 1913; and

1-6 Whereas, The formal education of R. Guild Gray took place in the

1-7 elementary and secondary schools in Reno, the University of Nevada,

1-8 Stanford University, University of Southern California and the College of

1-9 the Pacific, but his lifelong love of Nevada and understanding of life came

1-10 from the education he received roaming the deserts and mountains of this

1-11 state; and

2-1 Whereas, R. Guild Gray was superintendent of the Las Vegas Union

2-2 School District No. 2 from 1953 to 1956 before becoming superintendent

2-3 of the newly consolidated Clark County School District, a position he held

2-4 until 1961; and

2-5 Whereas, R. Guild Gray was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1963

2-6 and served until 1966, including the Special Sessions of 1964, 1965 and

2-7 1966, during which time he was a member of the committees on Building

2-8 and Construction, Education, Elections, Public Health and Public Morals,

2-9 and Taxation; and

2-10 Whereas, The business world knew R. Guild Gray as a savings and

2-11 loan executive but many people, especially the students at the Gray

2-12 Elementary School in Las Vegas which was named in his honor, knew him

2-13 as a reservoir of knowledge of Nevada history and lore; and

2-14 Whereas, The deep passion R. Guild Gray had for Nevada became

2-15 apparent to the world in the books he authored, including The Treble V, a

2-16 story containing the history and legends of cattle ranchers in northeastern

2-17 Nevada, and Nature Sings, a collection of Gray’s poetry and photographs

2-18 of the Great Basin filled with his reflections on life and death; and

2-19 Whereas, R. Guild Gray is survived by his daughter, Irmalee Ross, and

2-20 his son, Gary Gray, both of Las Vegas and his sister, Juanita Jensen of

2-21 Reno; now, therefore, be it

2-22 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-23 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-24 Legislature express their deepest sympathy to the family of R. Guild Gray

2-25 including his children, Irmalee Ross and Gary Gray, his sister, Juanita

2-26 Jensen, his grandchildren and his great-grandchild; and be it further

2-27 Resolved, That the love of Nevada expressed in numerous ways by R.

2-28 Guild Gray throughout his life may live on in the hearts of those who knew

2-29 him and those who continue to be inspired and taught by his published

2-30 works; and be it further

2-31 Resolved, That the residents of Nevada hold the memory of R. Guild

2-32 Gray as someone he described in a poem from Nature Sings:

2-33 Blessed

2-34 Are those who sing at daily toil,

2-35 Who find a joy in tasks begun,

2-36 Who know their sunlit paths will end

2-37 With pride in goodly works well done.

2-38 And be it further

2-39 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-40 copy of this resolution to the children of R. Guild Gray, Irmalee Ross and

2-41 Gary Gray, his sister, Juanita Jensen, and the R. Guild Gray Elementary

2-42 School.
