ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing former Assemblywoman

Juanita Greer White.

1-1 Whereas, On September 18, 1997, the residents of the State of Nevada

1-2 lost a dedicated champion of higher education with the passing of former

1-3 Assemblywoman Juanita Greer White; and

1-4 Whereas, Juanita Greer White, who was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on

1-5 November 19, 1905, is said to have baked cakes as a child to help her

1-6 mother with a campaign that eventually gave women the right to vote; and

1-7 Whereas, After being refused entry to the Massachusetts Institute of

1-8 Technology because she was a woman, Juanita Greer White applied and

1-9 was accepted to Johns Hopkins University where she earned her doctorate

1-10 in chemistry in 1929; and

2-1 Whereas, After teaching college classes in Virginia, New York,

2-2 Georgia and Connecticut, Juanita Greer White moved to Southern Nevada

2-3 with her husband, Thomas Sherman White, M.D., in 1956 and quickly

2-4 began pursuing her personal goal of enhancing opportunities for higher

2-5 education; and

2-6 Whereas, The role of Juanita Greer White as a charter member of the

2-7 Nevada Southern University Land Foundation from 1966 to 1971 helped

2-8 secure 300 acres for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which now

2-9 includes a life sciences building named in her honor in 1976; and

2-10 Whereas, Juanita Greer White was elected twice to the Board of

2-11 Regents of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, serving from 1963 to

2-12 1971, during which time the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, grew from

2-13 an extension campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, to a 4-year,

2-14 degree-granting university and rival of the University of Nevada, Reno; and

2-15 Whereas, The passion of Juanita Greer White in the area of education

2-16 was also evident by her service on the Western Interstate Commission for

2-17 Higher Education from 1965 to 1971 and as president of the Nevada State

2-18 Division of the American Association of University Women from 1963 to

2-19 1965; and

2-20 Whereas, Juanita Greer White was elected to the Assembly of the

2-21 Nevada Legislature and served during the 1971 session on the committees

2-22 on Education, Elections and Health and Welfare; and

2-23 Whereas, Bills and resolutions sponsored by Juanita Greer White

2-24 during her term in the Assembly included measures to improve public

2-25 education in the State of Nevada and promote the rights and recognition of

2-26 women and minorities; and

2-27 Whereas, Juanita Greer White is survived by her daughter, Sally

2-28 Johnston of Fredericksburg, Texas; now, therefore, be it

2-29 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-30 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-31 Legislature express their deepest sympathy to the family of Juanita Greer

2-32 White including her daughter, her grandchildren and her great-

2-33 grandchildren; and be it further

2-34 Resolved, That Juanita Greer White will be remembered as a pioneer

2-35 of women in the field of science and a strong advocate of higher education

2-36 who, through personal commitment and hard work, left an indelible mark

2-37 on public education in the State of Nevada; and be it further

2-38 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-39 copy of this resolution to Sally Johnston, the daughter of Juanita Greer

2-40 White.
