ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTION—Memorializing Fred A. Olson.

Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature were deeply1-2
saddened to learn of the passing of Fred A. Olson on April 3, 1999; and1-3
Whereas, Fred Olson was born in Spokane, Washington, on April 4,1-4
1921; and1-5
Whereas, Fred Olson was a lifelong sailor, serving his country in the1-6
Merchant Marine from 1944 until his retirement in 1986, who began his1-7
seafaring career with the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific to see the world and1-8
to be involved in the World War II effort; and1-9
Whereas, Following the war, Fred Olson joined the Seafarers1-10
International Union where his union membership spurred his interest in1-11
politics and the power of communication, believing that any individual2-1
could go directly to a governor, representative or city commissioner to2-2
resolve a problem; and2-3
Whereas, The union also played an integral part in Fred Olson’s2-4
marriage to his wife, Lois, having met her aboard the Santa Mercedes when2-5
she was the steward delegate for the Marine Cooks and Stewards Union2-6
and he was the ship’s chairman for the Seafarers International Union; and2-7
Whereas, Their marriage has been called "the most successful merger"2-8
between the Seafarers International Union and the Marine Cooks and2-9
Stewards Union because of their teamwork in all areas of their lives; and2-10
Whereas, After ending their sailing careers aboard the S.S.2-11
Constitution upon retirement in 1986, the couple dived into politics and2-12
community affairs, bringing national attention to issues involving maritime2-13
interests, seniors, health care and manufactured housing reform; and2-14
Whereas, As a resident of Nevada for 19 years, Fred Olson made many2-15
contributions to this state as a member of the Paradise Democratic Club,2-16
Citizens Water Board, Nevada Association of Manufactured Homeowners2-17
and Seniors United; and2-18
Whereas, Fred Olson is survived by his wife, Lois, son Jaime Bonita of2-19
Shelton, Washington, and five grandchildren; now, therefore, be it2-20
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate2-21
Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada2-22
Legislature offer their sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the2-23
family and friends of Fred A. Olson, a man who contributed so much to his2-24
country and the State of Nevada; and be it further2-25
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a2-26
copy of this resolution to Fred Olson’s beloved wife and partner, Lois.~
