ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing Fred A. Olson.

1-1 Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature were deeply

1-2 saddened to learn of the passing of Fred A. Olson on April 3, 1999; and

1-3 Whereas, Fred Olson was born in Spokane, Washington, on April 4,

1-4 1921; and

1-5 Whereas, Fred Olson was a lifelong sailor, serving his country in the

1-6 Merchant Marine from 1944 until his retirement in 1986, who began his

1-7 seafaring career with the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific to see the world and

1-8 to be involved in the World War II effort; and

1-9 Whereas, Following the war, Fred Olson joined the Seafarers

1-10 International Union where his union membership spurred his interest in

1-11 politics and the power of communication, believing that any individual

2-1 could go directly to a governor, representative or city commissioner to

2-2 resolve a problem; and

2-3 Whereas, The union also played an integral part in Fred Olson’s

2-4 marriage to his wife, Lois, having met her aboard the Santa Mercedes when

2-5 she was the steward delegate for the Marine Cooks and Stewards Union

2-6 and he was the ship’s chairman for the Seafarers International Union; and

2-7 Whereas, Their marriage has been called "the most successful merger"

2-8 between the Seafarers International Union and the Marine Cooks and

2-9 Stewards Union because of their teamwork in all areas of their lives; and

2-10 Whereas, After ending their sailing careers aboard the S.S.

2-11 Constitution upon retirement in 1986, the couple dived into politics and

2-12 community affairs, bringing national attention to issues involving maritime

2-13 interests, seniors, health care and manufactured housing reform; and

2-14 Whereas, As a resident of Nevada for 19 years, Fred Olson made many

2-15 contributions to this state as a member of the Paradise Democratic Club,

2-16 Citizens Water Board, Nevada Association of Manufactured Homeowners

2-17 and Seniors United; and

2-18 Whereas, Fred Olson is survived by his wife, Lois, son Jaime Bonita of

2-19 Shelton, Washington, and five grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

2-20 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-21 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-22 Legislature offer their sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the

2-23 family and friends of Fred A. Olson, a man who contributed so much to his

2-24 country and the State of Nevada; and be it further

2-25 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-26 copy of this resolution to Fred Olson’s beloved wife and partner, Lois.
