ASSEMBLY JOINT RESOLUTIONExpressing sympathy, support and condolences to the

grieving families and students of Columbine High School, the community of Littleton,

Colorado, and the residents of the State of Colorado relating to the recent tragedy

in Littleton, Colorado.

1-1 Whereas, On April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Littleton,

1-2 Colorado, violence erupted resulting in the tragic and senseless deaths and

1-3 wounding of many of the school’s students and their teachers; and

1-4 Whereas, The events which occurred on that day will mark one of the

1-5 most sorrowful days in our nation’s history; and

1-6 Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature and many Nevada

1-7 residents joined the world in watching, with feelings of emptiness, as the

1-8 terrible events of that day unfolded; and

1-9 Whereas, The empathy expressed by the residents of Nevada is

1-10 genuinely and sincerely felt since violence has also resulted in the deaths of

1-11 students at some of Nevada’s schools; and

1-12 Whereas, The entirety of our society, including families, schools,

1-13 religious institutions and government, must come together and join in their

1-14 efforts to protect the youth of this nation from these acts of violence and

1-15 death; and

1-16 Whereas, Following the recent tragedy at Columbine High School, a

1-17 series of rumors or threats of similar acts of violence have spread across the

1-18 nation, including several incidents occurring in Nevada; and

2-1 Whereas, The Nevada Legislature is deeply concerned about the

2-2 welfare and safety of children and other residents of the communities

2-3 within this state, as well as throughout this nation; now, therefore, be it

2-4 Resolved by the Assembly and Senate of the State of Nevada,

2-5 Jointly, That the members of the Nevada Legislature, on behalf of all

2-6 Nevadans do hereby express their most sincere sympathy, support and

2-7 heartfelt condolences to the families of all the victims of this heinous

2-8 tragedy that occurred in Littleton, Colorado, the students and faculty of

2-9 Columbine High School, the community of Littleton as a whole and the

2-10 residents of the State of Colorado; and be it further

2-11 Resolved, That the victims of this tragedy will not have lost their lives

2-12 in vain, but will have provided the catalyst for the leaders of this nation,

2-13 elected and otherwise, to renew their commitment to protect our society

2-14 and its children by teaching tolerance and respect for each other, and by

2-15 taking the time to promote peace; and be it further

2-16 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit a

2-17 copy of this resolution to Tim Westerberg, principal of Columbine High

2-18 School, Pat Cronenberger, Mayor of Littleton, Colorado, and Bill Owens,

2-19 Governor of the State of Colorado; and be it further

2-20 Resolved, That this resolution becomes effective upon passage and

2-21 approval.
