THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. 1. There is hereby appropriated from the state general1-2
fund to the Clark County School District the sum of $11,793,800 to support1-3
a comprehensive plan to reduce the number of pupils who drop out of1-4
school.1-5
2. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 3, the Clark County1-6
School District shall use the money appropriated by subsection 1 for1-7
programs and methods that are designed to reduce the number of pupils1-8
who drop out of school, including:1-9
(a) Extending the length of the school day;1-10
(b) Providing assistance to pupils who are at risk of academic failure;1-11
(c) Developing assessments of pupils that will enable schools to identify1-12
pupils who require additional academic assistance; and2-1
(d) Maintaining and expanding the current programs of the school2-2
district that are designed to reduce the number of pupils who drop out of2-3
school by providing a funding structure that enables expansion based on the2-4
need to serve additional students.2-5
3. The Clark County School District shall use not more than $50,000 of2-6
the money appropriated by subsection 1 to conduct an evaluation of the2-7
success of the Clark County School District in reducing the number of2-8
pupils who drop out of school. On or before March 1, 2001, the Clark2-9
County School District shall submit a written report that includes the results2-10
of the evaluation, including any recommendations for legislation, to the2-11
Director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau for transmission to the 71st2-12
session of the Nevada Legislature.2-13
4. Any remaining balance of the appropriation made by subsection 12-14
must not be committed for expenditure after June 30, 2001, and reverts to2-15
the state general fund as soon as all payments of money committed have2-16
been made.2-17
Sec. 2. This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.~
