THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. 1. There is hereby appropriated from the state general1-2
fund to the Department of Education the sum of $500,000 for distribution1-3
to school districts for programs designed to identify and develop candidates1-4
for licensed educational personnel positions which are in areas of high1-5
need. The money appropriated may be used to pay the costs of, without1-6
limitition:1-7
(a) Tuition and books for participants in programs to prepare1-8
instructional aides and support staff to become teachers;1-9
(b) Stipends for mentor teachers;1-10
(c) Special developmental internal programs designed as alternatives to1-11
standard requirements for licensing candidates;1-12
(d) Out-of-state participants who agree to serve their practicums in this1-13
state in the areas of speech pathology, psychology and self-contained1-14
special education programs; and2-1
(e) Future teachers’ organizations in middle and high schools.2-2
2. The money appropriated by subsection 1 must be distributed to2-3
school districts in the same percentage as the proportion of pupils in each2-4
school district bears to the total number of pupils in this state, determined2-5
from the official count taken from the previous school year.2-6
Sec. 2. Any remaining balance of the appropriation made by section 12-7
of this act must not be committed for expenditure after June 30, 2001, and2-8
reverts to the state general fund as soon as all payments of money2-9
committed have been made.2-10
Sec. 3. This act becomes effective on July 1, 1999.~
