AN ACT relating to license plates; providing for the manufacturing of certain license plates

under certain circumstances; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. NRS 482.266 is hereby amended to read as follows:

  1. 482.266 1. [At the request of a person who applies for the
  1. registration or renewal of the registration of a vehicle that has motor
  1. vehicle license plates which were issued before January 1, 1982, the
  1. department shall refurbish the license plates for a fee not to exceed the
  1. actual cost of the refurbishment.
  1. 2. If a motor vehicle license plate that was issued before January 1,
  1. 1982, is delivered to the department for refurbishment, the person who
  1. applies for the registration or renewal of registration of the vehicle shall
  1. display on the vehicle a temporary permit which must be affixed to the
  1. vehicle in a form, manner and position determined by the department.] A
  1. person who desires to have regular or personalized license plates that are
  1. substantially in the same color and form as license plates manufactured
  1. before January 1, 1982, must:
  1. (a) Submit a written request for such license plates to the department
  1. in a manner and form prescribed by the department; and
  1. (b) In addition to all other applicable registration fees, licensing fees
  1. and motor vehicle privilege taxes, pay the manufacturing fee prescribed
  1. by the department.
  1. A person requesting license plates pursuant to this section must comply
  1. with all requirements for registration and licensing pursuant to this
  1. chapter. A request for license plates pursuant to this section does not, by
  1. itself, constitute a request for special license plates pursuant to
  1. subsection 3 of NRS 482.265.
  1. 2. After receiving a request and the full amount of the payment due
  1. for license plates requested pursuant to subsection 1, the department
  1. shall manufacture the license plates using substantially the same process,
  1. dies and materials as were used to manufacture license plates before
  1. January 1, 1982. The department shall deliver license plates requested
  1. pursuant to this section to a person who requests such license plates
  1. within 180 days after acceptance of the written request or after receipt of
  1. payment therefor, whichever occurs last.
  1. 3. The department shall:
  1. (a) Prescribe, by regulation, a manner and form for submitting a
  1. written request pursuant to subsection 1. The form must include, without
  1. limitation, an indication of whether the requester desires to have the
  2. same letters and numbers on the license plates requested as are on the
  1. license plates that are registered to him at the time of the request.
  1. (b) Determine the cost of manufacturing a license plate pursuant to
  1. this section and prescribe a manufacturing fee, which must not exceed
  1. $25, to defray the cost of manufacturing license plates pursuant to this
  1. section. The manufacturing fee must be:
  1. (1) Collected by the department;
  1. (2) Deposited with the state treasurer to the credit of the motor
  1. vehicle fund; and
  1. (3) Allocated to the department to defray the costs of
  1. manufacturing license plates pursuant to this section.
  1. 4. A person who requests license plates pursuant to this section may
  1. keep the license plates which are registered to him at the time of the
  1. request if the license plates requested contain the same letters and
  1. numbers as the license plates which are registered to him at the time of
  1. the request.

Sec. 2. Section 4 of chapter 422, Statutes of Nevada 1997, at page

1503, is hereby amended to read as follows:

Sec. 4. 1. This section and section 3 of this act become

effective on October 1, 1997.

2. Section 2 of this act becomes effective at 12:02 a.m. on

October 1, 1997.

3. Section 1 of this act becomes effective on [January 1, 2001.]

October 1, 1999.

Sec. 3. This act becomes effective at 12:01 a.m. on October 1, 1999.
