THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. NRS 236.015 is hereby amended to read as follows: 236.015 1. The following days are declared to be legal holidays for1-3
state, county and city governmental offices:1-4
January 1 (New Year’s Day)1-5
Third Monday in January (Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday)1-6
Third Monday in February (Washington’s Birthday)1-7
Last Monday in May (Memorial Day)1-8

November 11 (Veterans’ Day)1-12

2. Except as otherwise provided by NRS 293.560 and2-2
293C.527, all state, county and city offices, courts, public schools2-3
and the University and Community College System of Nevada must2-4
close on the legal holidays enumerated in subsection 1 unless in the2-5
case of appointed holidays all or a part thereof are specifically2-6
exempted.2-7

(a) Sunday, the Monday following must be observed as a legal holiday.2-10
(b) Saturday, the Friday preceding must be observed as a legal holiday.2-11
Sec. 2. NRS 293.560 is hereby amended to read as follows: 293.560 1. Except as otherwise provided in NRS 293.502,2-13
registration must close at 9 p.m. on the fifth Saturday preceding any primary2-14
or general election and at 9 p.m. on the third Saturday preceding any recall2-15
or special election, except that if a recall or special election is held on the2-16
same day as a primary or general election, registration must close at 9 p.m.2-17
on the fifth Saturday preceding the day of the elections.2-18
2. The offices of the county clerk and other ex officio registrars must be2-19
open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the office of the county clerk must also be2-20
open from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., including Saturdays, during the last days before2-21
the close of registration, according to the following schedule:2-22
(a) In a county whose population is less than 100,000, those offices must2-23
be open during the last 3 days before registration closes.2-24
(b) In all other counties, those offices must be open during the last 5 days2-25
before registration closes.2-26
3. Except for a special election held pursuant to chapter 306 or 350 of2-27
NRS:2-28
(a) The county clerk of each county shall cause a notice signed by him to2-29
be published in a newspaper having a general circulation in the county2-30
indicating the day that registration will be closed. If no such newspaper is2-31
published in the county, the publication may be made in a newspaper of2-32
general circulation published in the nearest county in this state.2-33
(b) The notice must be published once each week for 4 consecutive2-34
weeks next preceding the close of registration for any election.2-35
4. The offices of the county clerk and other ex officio registrars may2-36
remain open on the last Friday in October2-37

Sec. 3. NRS 388.110 is hereby amended to read as follows: 388.110 No school may be kept open on any day declared to be a legal2-40
holiday pursuant to NRS 236.015, except that any board of trustees of a3-1
school district may elect to keep school open on the last Friday in October3-2

Sec. 4. This act becomes effective on January 1, 2000.~
