AN ACT relating to veterans; authorizing the board of regents of the University of Nevada to grant full or partial waivers of fees assessed against certain veterans attending a university or community college within the University and Community College System of Nevada; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

1-1 Section 1. Chapter 396 of NRS is hereby amended by adding thereto a

1-2 new section to read as follows:

1-3 1. The board of regents may grant a full or partial waiver of fees,

1-4 including, without limitation, registration fees, course fees, laboratory

1-5 fees and parking fees, assessed against a person who has served at least

1-6 90 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United

1-7 States and whose discharge or release was other than dishonorable, if:

1-8 (a) The person is not eligible to have such fees paid by any program of

1-9 the Federal Government; and

1-10 (b) For at least 1 year immediately preceding his:

1-11 (1) Matriculation at any university or community college within the

1-12 University and Community College System of Nevada, the person has

1-13 been a bona fide resident of the State of Nevada; or

1-14 (2) Induction into the Armed Forces of the United States, the

1-15 person was a bona fide resident of the State of Nevada.

2-1 2. As used in this section, "bona fide resident" shall be construed in

2-2 accordance with the provisions of NRS 10.155. The qualification "bona

2-3 fide" is intended to ensure that the residence is genuine and established

2-4 for purposes other than the avoidance of fees.

2-5 Sec. 2. This act becomes effective on July 1, 1999.
