AN ACT relating to motor vehicles; authorizing the department of motor vehicles and public safety to issue placards for the members of volunteer fire departments; and

providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. Chapter 482 of NRS is hereby amended by adding thereto a

new section to read as follows:

1. The chief of a volunteer fire department may apply to the

department of motor vehicles and public safety for the issuance of a

placard for each member of the volunteer fire department. The

application must:

(a) Be submitted on a form approved by the department of motor

vehicles and public safety; and

(b) Include:

(1) The name of each person for whom the application is

submitted; and

(2) Proof satisfactory to the department of motor vehicles and

public safety that each person named in the application is a member of

the volunteer fire department.

2. Upon receipt of an application pursuant to the provisions of

subsection 1, the department of motor vehicles and public safety may

prepare and issue the number of placards requested in the application. The placards may be prepared using any colors and designs the

department of motor vehicles and public safety deems appropriate and

may include any letters, numbers or combination of letters and numbers

requested by the chief of the volunteer fire department.

3. A placard issued pursuant to the provisions of this section may:

(a) Include any designs, decals, insignia, letters, numbers or other

identifying marks the chief of the volunteer fire department deems

appropriate; and

(b) Be assigned to a member of the volunteer fire department who is

qualified to receive a placard pursuant to the provisions of subsection 1.

4. If a member of a volunteer fire department to whom a placard is

assigned pursuant to the provisions of subsection 3 ceases to be a

member of that department, the member shall surrender the placard to

the chief of that department. The chief may assign the placard to a

member of that department if the chief submits a written statement to the

department of motor vehicles and public safety which:

(a) Specifies the name of the former member of the volunteer fire

department who surrendered the placard and the name of the member to

whom the placard will be assigned; and

(b) Includes proof satisfactory to the department of motor vehicles

and public safety that the member to whom the placard will be assigned

is a member of the volunteer fire department.

5. A placard issued pursuant to the provisions of this section may not

be used in lieu of a license plate issued pursuant to the provisions of this

chapter.

6. The department of motor vehicles and public safety may:

(a) Charge a fee for preparing and issuing a placard pursuant to the

provisions of this section. The fee must not exceed the cost of preparing

and issuing the placard.

(b) Adopt regulations to carry out the provisions of this section.
