AN ACT relating to motor vehicles; authorizing the department of motor vehicles and public safety to issue placards for certain persons who respond to emergencies; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

1-1 Section 1. Chapter 482 of NRS is hereby amended by adding thereto a

1-2 new section to read as follows:

1-3 1. The chief of a volunteer fire department may apply to the

1-4 department of motor vehicles and public safety for the issuance of a

1-5 placard for a member of the volunteer fire department or a volunteer

1-6 emergency medical technician associated with the department. The

1-7 application must:

1-8 (a) Be submitted on a form approved by the department of motor

1-9 vehicles and public safety; and

1-10 (b) Include:

1-11 (1) The name of the volunteer fire department;

1-12 (2) The county in which the volunteer fire department is located;

1-13 and

1-14 (3) The number of placards requested.

1-15 2. Upon receipt of an application pursuant to the provisions of

1-16 subsection 1, the department of motor vehicles and public safety shall

1-17 prepare and issue the number of placards requested in the application.

1-18 The placards must be yellow in color and must have appropriate

2-1 mounting holes. The volunteer fire department is responsible for

2-2 determining the design, lettering and numbering of the placards.

2-3 3. The chief of the volunteer fire department shall establish rules:

2-4 (a) Regarding the issuance and use of the placards; and

2-5 (b) Establishing a method of establishing and maintaining records of

2-6 placards that have been issued.

2-7 4. When a member to whom a placard has been issued ceases to be a

2-8 member of the volunteer fire department, or when a volunteer emergency

2-9 medical technician to whom a placard has been issued ceases to be

2-10 associated with the department, the person shall surrender the placard to

2-11 the chief of the volunteer fire department from which he received the

2-12 placard.

2-13 5. A placard issued pursuant to the provisions of this section may not

2-14 be used in lieu of a license plate otherwise required by this chapter.

2-15 6. The department of motor vehicles and public safety shall not

2-16 charge a fee for the issuance of the placards pursuant to this section.
