THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. NRS 484.366 is hereby amended to read as follows: 484.366 1. A person shall not drive a motor vehicle at a speed in1-3
excess of 15 miles per hour in an area designated as a school zone except:1-4
(a) On a day on which school is not in session;1-5
(b) During the period from a half hour after school is no longer in1-6
operation to a half hour before school is next in operation;1-7
(c) If the zone is designated by an operational speed limit beacon,1-8
during the hours when the pupils of the school are in class and the yellow1-9
lights of the speed limit beacon are not flashing in the manner which1-10
indicates that the speed limit is in effect1-11
(d) If the zone is not designated by an operational speed limit beacon,1-12
during the times when the sign designating the school zone indicates that1-13
the speed limit is not in effect.1-14
2. A person shall not drive a motor vehicle at a speed in excess of 251-15
miles per hour in an area designated as a school crossing zone except:1-16
(a) On a day on which school is not in session;1-17
(b) During the period from a half hour after school is no longer in1-18
operation to a half hour before school is next in operation;2-1
(c) If the zone is designated by an operational speed limit beacon,2-2
during the hours when the pupils of the school are in class and the yellow2-3
lights of the speed limit beacon are not flashing in the manner which2-4
indicates that the speed limit is in effect2-5
(d) If the zone is not designated by an operational speed limit beacon,2-6
during the times when the sign designating the school zone indicates that2-7
the speed limit is not in effect.2-8
3. The governing body of a local government or the department of2-9
transportation shall designate school zones and school crossing zones. An2-10
area must not be designated as a school zone if imposing a speed limit of2-11
15 miles per hour would be unsafe because of higher speed limits in2-12
adjoining areas.2-13
4. Each such governing body and the department shall provide signs to2-14
mark the beginning and end of each school zone and school crossing zone2-15
which it respectively designates. Each sign marking the beginning of such2-16
a zone must include a designation of the hours when the speed limit is in2-17
effect or that the speed limit is in effect when children are present.2-18
5. With respect to each school zone and school crossing zone in a2-19
school district, the superintendent of the school district or his designee, in2-20
conjunction with the department of transportation and the governing2-21
body of the local government that designated the school zone or school2-22
crossing zone and after consulting with the principal of the school and2-23
the agency that is responsible for enforcing the speed limit in the zone,2-24
shall determine the times when the speed limit is in effect.2-25
6. As used in this section, "speed limit beacon" means a device which2-26
is used in conjunction with a sign and equipped with two or more yellow2-27
lights that flash alternately to indicate when the speed limit in a school zone2-28
or school crossing zone is in effect.2-29
Sec. 2. NRS 268.425 is hereby amended to read as follows: 268.425 The city council or other governing body of each incorporated2-31
city, whether incorporated by general or special act, shall cause to be2-32
displayed, in each school zone and school crossing zone where the city has2-33
posted a speed limit, signs or other devices designating the2-34

Sec. 3. NRS 269.185 is hereby amended to read as follows: 269.185 1. In addition to the powers and jurisdiction conferred upon2-38
the town boards or boards of county commissioners by this chapter, such2-39
boards may:2-40
(a) Regulate traffic upon the streets and alleys of towns or cities2-41
governed by such boards pursuant to this chapter.2-42
(b) Regulate the speed, parking, stopping, turning and operation of all2-43
motor vehicles and other vehicles using the streets and alleys.3-1
(c) Pass and adopt all ordinances, rules and regulations, and do and3-2
perform all acts and things necessary for the execution of the powers and3-3
jurisdiction conferred by this section.3-4
2. The town board or board of county commissioners shall cause to be3-5
displayed, in each school zone and school crossing zone where the county3-6
has posted a speed limit, signs or other devices designating the3-7

to apply.3-9
Sec. 4. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsections 4 and 5 of NRS3-10
484.366, as amended by this act, a sign which is in existence on October 1,3-11
1999, to mark the beginning of a school zone or school crossing zone need3-12
not be replaced to comply with the provisions of NRS 484.366, as amended3-13
by this act, until the sign would have otherwise been replaced in the normal3-14
course of maintaining the sign.~
