AN ACT relating to elections; authorizing a candidate for certain elective offices to include a statement in a publication prepared by the secretary of state; establishing certain requirements regarding the information that is included in the statement; authorizing the secretary of state to adopt certain regulations; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. Chapter 293 of NRS is hereby amended by adding thereto1-2
the provisions set forth as sections 2 and 3 of this act.1-3
Sec. 2. 1. A candidate whose name will appear on the ballot for the1-4
general election for the office of United States Senator or Representative1-5
in Congress or any statewide office may prepare a statement for1-6
inclusion in a publication to be prepared and distributed by the secretary1-7
of state.1-8
2. The statement:1-9
(a) May include the name, age and occupation of the candidate and a1-10
brief description of the education and qualifications of the candidate;1-11
(b) Must be written on a form prescribed by the secretary of state;1-12
(c) Must be authored by the candidate personally;1-13
(d) Must be not more than 400 words in length; and1-14
(e) Must not make reference to any other candidate or to the1-15
qualifications, character or activities of any other candidate.1-16
3. The candidate must file the statement with the filing officer with1-17
whom he must file his declaration of candidacy or acceptance of2-1
candidacy on or before the date that his declaration of candidacy or2-2
acceptance of candidacy must be filed.2-3
4. A candidate may withdraw, but not change, his statement not later2-4
than 7 days after the date that his declaration of candidacy or acceptance2-5
of candidacy must be filed.2-6
5. The provisions of this section do not release a candidate from any2-7
criminal or civil liability for any information he includes in his2-8
statement.2-9
6. The secretary of state may reject a statement if it is not in2-10
conformance with the provisions of subsection 2 or the regulations2-11
adopted by the secretary of state pursuant to section 3 of this act.2-12
Sec. 3. The secretary of state shall adopt regulations to carry out the2-13
provisions of this act.2-14
Sec. 4. NRS 293.195 is hereby amended to read as follows: 293.195 1. Judicial offices, school offices, the office of county2-16
sheriff, the board of regents of the University of Nevada, city and town2-17
officers, the state board of education and members of boards of hospital2-18
trustees of public hospitals are hereby designated nonpartisan offices.2-19
2. No words designating the party affiliation of a candidate for2-20
nonpartisan2-21
3. No words designating the party affiliation of a candidate for2-22
nonpartisan office may be included in a statement prepared pursuant to2-23
section 2 of this act.~
