AN ACT relating to the commission on mental health and mental retardation; revising the composition of the commission to include a marriage and family therapist; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

1-1 Section 1. NRS 232.303 is hereby amended to read as follows:

1-2 232.303 1. There is hereby created in the department a commission

1-3 on mental health and mental retardation consisting of [seven] eight

1-4 members appointed by the governor, at least three of whom have training or

1-5 experience in dealing with mental retardation.

1-6 2. The governor shall appoint:

1-7 (a) A psychiatrist licensed to practice medicine in this state, from a list

1-8 of three candidates submitted by the Nevada Psychiatric Association;

1-9 (b) A psychologist licensed to practice in this state and experienced in

1-10 clinical practice, from a list of four candidates , two of whom are submitted

1-11 by the Northern Nevada Association for Certified Psychologists and two of

1-12 whom are submitted by the Southern Society for Certified Psychologists;

1-13 (c) A physician, other than a psychiatrist, licensed to practice medicine

1-14 in this state and who has experience in dealing with mental retardation,

1-15 from a list of three candidates submitted by the Nevada State Medical

1-16 Association;

1-17 (d) A social worker who has a master’s degree and has experience in

1-18 dealing with mental illness or mental retardation, or both;

2-1 (e) A registered nurse licensed to practice in this state who has

2-2 experience in dealing with mental illness or mental retardation, or both,

from a list of three candidates submitted by the Nevada Nurses Association;

2-3 (f) A marriage and family therapist licensed to practice in this state,

from a list of three candidates submitted by the Nevada Association for

2-4 Marriage and Family Therapy;

2-5 (g) A representative of the general public who has a special interest in

the field of mental health; and

2-6 [(g)] (h) A representative of the general public who has a special interest

in the field of mental retardation.

2-7 3. The governor shall appoint the chairman of the commission from

2-8 among its members.

4. After the initial terms, each member shall serve a term of 4 years. If

2-9 a vacancy occurs during a member’s term, the governor shall appoint a

person qualified under this section to replace that member for the

2-10 remainder of the unexpired term.
