SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION—Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the
American Legion and designating March 13 through March 19, 1999, as American Legion
Week in Nevada.

Whereas, The American Legion, an organization of wartime veterans1-2
united by a common bond of continued service to God and country, was1-3
founded in 1919, shortly after the end of World War I; and1-4
Whereas, The American Legion was instrumental in convening the1-5
first National Flag Conference in 1923 where representatives from various1-6
patriotic organizations drafted the U.S. Flag Code, a set of guidelines for1-7
civilian flag courtesy, later adopted by Congress in 1942; and2-1
Whereas, The American Legion is a national organization comprised2-2
of nearly 3 million men and women who have served their country with2-3
honor during one of the wars of the 20th century; and2-4
Whereas, In Nevada, the American Legion presently has more than2-5
9,000 members; and2-6
Whereas, By giving meaningful service in conjunction with the theme2-7
"Still Serving America," Legionnaires have made significant contributions2-8
to American thought and deed; and2-9
Whereas, Endeavors of the American Legion, which strengthen our2-10
freedom and perpetuate our free institutions, characterize this gigantic2-11
fraternity of service as one of the great bulwarks of the American way of2-12
life; and2-13
Whereas, One of the strongest beliefs of the American Legion is that2-14
education is the first requisite of good citizenship and the cornerstone upon2-15
which rests the future of this nation; and2-16
Whereas, Because of this belief, the American Legion founded2-17
National Education Week in 1921 and for the last 50 years has published2-18
the leading sourcebook for scholarships and financial aid entitled "Need A2-19
Lift?"; and2-20
Whereas, To further assist young men and women in continuing their2-21
education beyond high school, local American Legion Posts gave more2-22
than $3.6 million in scholarships during 1995-96; and2-23
Whereas, The American Legion has achieved its position of high2-24
esteem through programs of service to communities, states and our nation,2-25
including sponsorship of Nevada Boys’ State, scouting troops and high2-26
school oratorical contests, as well as many programs of service to veterans;2-27
and2-28
Whereas, Such programs have become an integral part of the lives of2-29
the youth and veterans in Nevada; and2-30
Whereas, This year the American Legion will observe the 80th2-31
anniversary of its founding from March 15 through March 17, 1999; now,2-32
therefore, be it2-33
Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly2-34
Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada2-35
Legislature do hereby commemorate the American Legion on its 80th2-36
anniversary as a national and state organization and designate the week of2-37
March 13 through March 19, 1999, as American Legion Week in Nevada;2-38
and be it further2-39
Resolved, That the American Legion is hereby commended for its2-40
support and efforts on behalf of the youth and veterans nationally and in2-41
Nevada; and be it further3-1
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a3-2
copy of this resolution to Pat Burch, Commander of the Department of3-3
Nevada of the American Legion and Harold L. "Butch" Miller, National3-4
