SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONCommemorating the 80th anniversary of the

American Legion and designating March 13 through March 19, 1999, as American Legion

Week in Nevada.

1-1 Whereas, The American Legion, an organization of wartime veterans

1-2 united by a common bond of continued service to God and country, was

1-3 founded in 1919, shortly after the end of World War I; and

1-4 Whereas, The American Legion was instrumental in convening the

1-5 first National Flag Conference in 1923 where representatives from various

1-6 patriotic organizations drafted the U.S. Flag Code, a set of guidelines for

1-7 civilian flag courtesy, later adopted by Congress in 1942; and

2-1 Whereas, The American Legion is a national organization comprised

2-2 of nearly 3 million men and women who have served their country with

2-3 honor during one of the wars of the 20th century; and

2-4 Whereas, In Nevada, the American Legion presently has more than

2-5 9,000 members; and

2-6 Whereas, By giving meaningful service in conjunction with the theme

2-7 "Still Serving America," Legionnaires have made significant contributions

2-8 to American thought and deed; and

2-9 Whereas, Endeavors of the American Legion, which strengthen our

2-10 freedom and perpetuate our free institutions, characterize this gigantic

2-11 fraternity of service as one of the great bulwarks of the American way of

2-12 life; and

2-13 Whereas, One of the strongest beliefs of the American Legion is that

2-14 education is the first requisite of good citizenship and the cornerstone upon

2-15 which rests the future of this nation; and

2-16 Whereas, Because of this belief, the American Legion founded

2-17 National Education Week in 1921 and for the last 50 years has published

2-18 the leading sourcebook for scholarships and financial aid entitled "Need A

2-19 Lift?"; and

2-20 Whereas, To further assist young men and women in continuing their

2-21 education beyond high school, local American Legion Posts gave more

2-22 than $3.6 million in scholarships during 1995-96; and

2-23 Whereas, The American Legion has achieved its position of high

2-24 esteem through programs of service to communities, states and our nation,

2-25 including sponsorship of Nevada Boys’ State, scouting troops and high

2-26 school oratorical contests, as well as many programs of service to veterans;

2-27 and

2-28 Whereas, Such programs have become an integral part of the lives of

2-29 the youth and veterans in Nevada; and

2-30 Whereas, This year the American Legion will observe the 80th

2-31 anniversary of its founding from March 15 through March 17, 1999; now,

2-32 therefore, be it

2-33 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-34 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-35 Legislature do hereby commemorate the American Legion on its 80th

2-36 anniversary as a national and state organization and designate the week of

2-37 March 13 through March 19, 1999, as American Legion Week in Nevada;

2-38 and be it further

2-39 Resolved, That the American Legion is hereby commended for its

2-40 support and efforts on behalf of the youth and veterans nationally and in

2-41 Nevada; and be it further

3-1 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a

3-2 copy of this resolution to Pat Burch, Commander of the Department of

3-3 Nevada of the American Legion and Harold L. "Butch" Miller, National

3-4 Commander of The American Legion.
