SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing distinguished educator, Edward

Ward Van Gorder.

1-1 Whereas, The people of the State of Nevada suffered a tremendous

1-2 loss with the passing of Edward Ward Van Gorder on December 9, 1997;

1-3 and

1-4 Whereas, Edward Van Gorder was born in Ithaca, New York, on

1-5 January 24, 1926, to Walter and Bessie Van Gorder; and

1-6 Whereas, Ed Van Gorder graduated from Ithaca High School in 1944

1-7 and attended Ithaca College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree

1-8 with a major in Physical Education, and a Master’s Degree in 1957; and

2-1 Whereas, Ed Van Gorder was employed by Reno School District No.

2-2 10 in September 1948 as a teacher and coach and served 15 years as a

2-3 coach, science teacher and counselor at B.D. Billinghurst Junior High

2-4 School; and

2-5 Whereas, Ed Van Gorder received counseling and administration

2-6 certificates after attending the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1962 until

2-7 1966 and in 1963 was appointed Principal of Hunter Lake Elementary

2-8 School in Reno where he served until his retirement in 1984; and

2-9 Whereas, After his retirement, Ed Van Gorder was elected to the

2-10 Board of School Trustees of the Washoe County School District in 1984

2-11 and was re-elected in 1992, serving as President, Vice President and Clerk;

2-12 and

2-13 Whereas, Ed Van Gorder was a member of the National Association

2-14 of Elementary Principals and the Nevada Association of School

2-15 Administrators; and

2-16 Whereas, This dedicated public servant was also active in civic

2-17 organizations including the B.P.O. Elks Lodge, Optimist Club, Reno Board

2-18 of Realtors, Nevada Association of School Boards and was a life member

2-19 of the Parent-Teacher Association; and

2-20 Whereas, Ed Van Gorder received numerous awards throughout his

2-21 life recognizing him for his contributions to education including the Award

2-22 of Excellence from the Hunter Lake PTA, Washoe County Teachers

2-23 Association Dedicated Performance Award, Nevada Association of School

2-24 Boards Meritorious Service Award, ROTC High Schools’ Leadership

2-25 Excellence Award, Sierra Council PTA Award and the Optimist

2-26 International Award; and

2-27 Whereas, The love and respect that Ed Van Gorder received from his

2-28 students was expressed simply by District Court Judge Charles McGee

2-29 who was quoted as saying, "For hundreds of us who came to the hardwood

2-30 floors of the old Billinghurst gym, for those who came there and received

2-31 our first lessons in life and discipline and laughter, for us Ed Van Gorder

2-32 was just ‘coach.’"; and

2-33 Whereas, Ed Van Gorder is survived by his wife Jan and sons Bill

2-34 Whitney of Reno and Robert Van Gorder of Fairfax, Virginia, daughters

2-35 Kristi Van Gorder of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Cathy Heemansen of Moraga,

2-36 California, Victoria Wilson and Cynthia Hanlon, both of Los Angeles,

2-37 California, brother Melvin Van Gorder of Ithaca, New York, six

2-38 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; now, therefore, be it

2-39 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-40 Concurring, That Edward Ward Van Gorder will forever be

2-41 remembered with highest regard by residents of this state and the many

2-42 pupils who benefited from his dedication and commitment to education;

2-43 and be it further

3-1 Resolved, That the members of this body express their deepest

3-2 sympathies and extend their sincere condolences to Edward Ward Van

3-3 Gorder’s beloved wife Jan and family; and be it further

3-4 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a

3-5 copy of this resolution to Jan Van Gorder.
