SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONHonoring Chinese journalist Gao Yu.

1-1 Whereas, Gao Yu, a well-known Chinese journalist, was one of the

1-2 first intellectuals to support students at Tiananmen Square in China; and

1-3 Whereas, In 1989, Gao Yu was involved in mediation between

1-4 students and the authorities in China during the pro-democracy movement

1-5 in Tiananmen Square and was one of the first intellectuals to be detained;

1-6 and

1-7 Whereas, In October, 1993, Gao Yu was apprehended by the Beijing

1-8 State Security 2 days before she was due to leave China for a fellowship at

1-9 Columbia University in New York; and

1-10 Whereas, This outstanding 52-year-old woman was not allowed to

1-11 have representation by her attorneys, her husband was not notified of her

1-12 apprehension and the verdict of spying and illegally providing state secrets

1-13 in articles for a Hong Kong magazine which was entered in November

1-14 1994, caused her to receive a sentence of 6 years in prison; and

1-15 Whereas, While the information reportedly obtained by Gao Yu may

1-16 have been confidential, there is no indication or evidence in the court

1-17 verdict that it concerned matters of national security; and

1-18 Whereas, In her appeal to the Beijing Higher People’s Court, Gao Yu

1-19 maintained that her detention and trial were political and stated that the

1-20 contents of the documents which she was accused of leaking did not

1-21 contain state secrets; and

2-1 Whereas, During this period in detention, Gao Yu is reported to have

2-2 developed heart and kidney conditions, from which she is said to be still

2-3 suffering; and

2-4 Whereas, Because of Gao Yu’s serious medical conditions, she was

2-5 recently released from prison, but continues to be on parole; now,

2-6 therefore, be it

2-7 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-8 Concurring, That the members of the Nevada Legislature do hereby

2-9 honor Gao Yu for her courage and determination to fight for the ideals of

2-10 democracy; and be it further

2-11 Resolved, That Las Vegas entertainers Malu-Lani and Maka-Koa are

2-12 hereby commended for their support of Gao Yu which they continue to

2-13 demonstrate by dedicating one song to Gao Yu at most of their

2-14 performances; and be it further

2-15 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

2-16 of this resolution to Malu-Lani and Maka-Koa.
