SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONCongratulating Dr. Wallace S. Broecker for

being selected as the recipient of the Nevada Medal given by the Desert Research Institute

and sponsored by Nevada Bell Shareholders.

1-1 Whereas, Scientists have made extraordinary advances in

1-2 understanding the critical role that ocean currents play in the earth’s

1-3 climate; and

1-4 Whereas, Dr. Wallace S. Broecker is renowned for making major

1-5 contributions to the understanding of climate change and global warming

1-6 through his research into global ocean currents and ocean chemical cycles;

1-7 and

2-1 Whereas, After receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Columbia

2-2 University in 1953, Dr. Broecker received his Ph.D. from Columbia

2-3 University in 1958; and

2-4 Whereas, Dr. Broecker has held professorships at Columbia University

2-5 throughout his career and is presently the Newberry Professor of

2-6 Geological Sciences at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth

2-7 Observatory; and

2-8 Whereas, Dr. Broecker has pioneered techniques in understanding

2-9 chemical changes in the ocean and atmosphere and is widely acclaimed for

2-10 his work in paleoclimatology, ocean chemistry, ocean circulation and

2-11 environmental sciences; and

2-12 Whereas, Dr. Broecker has been a leading voice warning of the

2-13 potential danger of increased greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere

2-14 and has spearheaded efforts to use Biosphere 2 as a laboratory to test the

2-15 potential effects of greenhouse gases on ecosystems; and

2-16 Whereas, Dr. Broecker was elected as a member of the National

2-17 Academy of Sciences in 1979 and has been a member of the American

2-18 Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1976; and

2-19 Whereas, Dr. Broecker’s many achievements have garnered him much-

2-20 deserved praise and have earned him numerous honors and awards,

2-21 including the prestigious Blue Planet Prize and the nation’s highest

2-22 scientific award, the National Medal of Science; and

2-23 Whereas, The Nevada Medal is an honor conferred by the Desert

2-24 Research Institute of the University and Community College System of

2-25 Nevada in recognition of outstanding scientific, engineering and technical

2-26 achievements; and

2-27 Whereas, The Nevada Medal is sponsored by Nevada Bell, a member

2-28 of the SBC Corporation and provider of a variety of telecommunication

2-29 services to Nevada; and

2-30 Whereas, Dr. Broecker’s achievements and continuing contributions in

2-31 the field of global environmental research have been recognized, and he is

2-32 being honored this year as the recipient of the Nevada Medal, which

2-33 includes a $10,000 prize; now, therefore, be it

2-34 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-35 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-36 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Wallace S. Broecker for being named

2-37 the recipient of the 1999 Nevada Medal given by the Desert Research

2-38 Institute; and be it further

2-39 Resolved, That Nevada Bell is hereby commended for its continued

2-40 sponsorship of this medal, which offers well-deserved recognition to

2-41 persons who have demonstrated outstanding scientific, engineering and

2-42 technical achievements; and be it further

3-1 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

3-2 of this resolution to Dr. Wallace S. Broecker.
