SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONCommending the recipient of the 1999

Prudential Spirit of Community Award, Shila Young.

1-1 Whereas, Shila Young, an esteemed resident of Reno and a student at

1-2 Clayton Middle School, recently received national recognition for

1-3 exemplary volunteer service as a recipient of the 1999 Prudential Spirit of

1-4 Community Award; and

1-5 Whereas, This prestigious award, presented by The Prudential

1-6 Insurance Company of America in partnership with the National

1-7 Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers

1-8 across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to

1-9 serving their communities by showing personal initiative and leadership in

1-10 providing volunteer service; and

2-1 Whereas, Shila Young earned this award by giving generously of her

2-2 time and energy in conducting a 5-month fund-raising campaign called

2-3 "Pennies for Jenny" that raised $25,000 to benefit her best friend by

2-4 enabling Jenny’s mother to stay at her bedside until her death as a result of

2-5 cancer; and

2-6 Whereas, By organizing fund-raisers and recruiting fellow students and

2-7 community members to join the campaign, Shila Young showed

2-8 exceptional leadership qualities; and

2-9 Whereas, Shila Young has demonstrated exemplary service to her

2-10 community and serves as an inspiration and role model to the young people

2-11 of the State of Nevada; now, therefore, be it

2-12 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-13 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-14 Legislature do hereby commend Shila Young for her leadership and

2-15 initiative and congratulate her for receiving the Prudential Spirit of

2-16 Community Award; and be it further

2-17 Resolved, That the Nevada Legislature commends Shila Young for her

2-18 generosity of spirit and selfless endeavors in volunteering her time to the

2-19 residents of her community and the State of Nevada; and be it further

2-20 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

2-21 of this resolution to Shila Young.
