SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION—Commending the recipient of the 1999
Prudential Spirit of Community Award, Shila Young.

Whereas, Shila Young, an esteemed resident of Reno and a student at1-2
Clayton Middle School, recently received national recognition for1-3
exemplary volunteer service as a recipient of the 1999 Prudential Spirit of1-4
Community Award; and1-5
Whereas, This prestigious award, presented by The Prudential1-6
Insurance Company of America in partnership with the National1-7
Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers1-8
across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to1-9
serving their communities by showing personal initiative and leadership in1-10
providing volunteer service; and2-1
Whereas, Shila Young earned this award by giving generously of her2-2
time and energy in conducting a 5-month fund-raising campaign called2-3
"Pennies for Jenny" that raised $25,000 to benefit her best friend by2-4
enabling Jenny’s mother to stay at her bedside until her death as a result of2-5
cancer; and2-6
Whereas, By organizing fund-raisers and recruiting fellow students and2-7
community members to join the campaign, Shila Young showed2-8
exceptional leadership qualities; and2-9
Whereas, Shila Young has demonstrated exemplary service to her2-10
community and serves as an inspiration and role model to the young people2-11
of the State of Nevada; now, therefore, be it2-12
Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly2-13
Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada2-14
Legislature do hereby commend Shila Young for her leadership and2-15
initiative and congratulate her for receiving the Prudential Spirit of2-16
Community Award; and be it further2-17
Resolved, That the Nevada Legislature commends Shila Young for her2-18
generosity of spirit and selfless endeavors in volunteering her time to the2-19
residents of her community and the State of Nevada; and be it further2-20
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy2-21
of this resolution to Shila Young.~
