SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONDesignating April 8, 1999, as Kiwanis Day in

the State of Nevada.

1-1 Whereas, Eighty-four years ago the "Benevolent Order of the

1-2 Brothers" was organized in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915, with

1-3 the goal of having "a mutual exchange of preferred treatment in

1-4 professional and business dealings"; and

1-5 Whereas, The following year the club’s name was changed to

1-6 "Kiwanis," a form of the Chippewa Indian word "Nun Keewanis," which

1-7 means "self-expression" and "we make ourselves known"; and

1-8 Whereas, Members of Kiwanis work toward six principles, which are

1-9 (1) the primacy of spiritual values, (2) living by the Golden Rule, (3)

1-10 adhering to high standards, (4) engendering strong citizenship, (5) building

2-1 better communities through service and (6) assisting in the formation of

2-2 sound public opinion; and

2-3 Whereas, Since 1917, the California, Nevada and Hawaii district,

2-4 CAL-NEV-HA, has become the largest district in Kiwanis International;

2-5 and

2-6 Whereas, The State of Nevada is proud of its own state divisions,

2-7 which consist of Division 23 of Northern Nevada, Division 28 of Southern

2-8 Nevada and Division 45 of Central Nevada, for their long history of service

2-9 to communities in this state; now, therefore, be it

2-10 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-11 Concurring, That the members of the Nevada Legislature hereby

2-12 designate April 8, 1999, as Kiwanis Day in the State of Nevada, in

2-13 recognition of the dedication toward helping others and the

2-14 accomplishments achieved by members of Kiwanis while serving their

2-15 communities; and be it further

2-16 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

2-17 of this resolution to Governor Clarkson R. "Bob" Maurer, Governor-elect

2-18 Terri Neumann, Lieutenant Governors Howard Mizell of Division 23, Phil

2-19 Junkins of Division 28 and Robert S. Ward of Division 45, and Lieutenant

2-20 Governors-elect Pete Falger of Division 28 and Pat Matheson of Division

2-21 45.
