SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing pioneer rancher and native

Nevadan Roger Teglia.

1-1 Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature were saddened to

1-2 learn of the passing of Roger Teglia on January 20, 1999; and

1-3 Whereas, Roger Teglia, a pioneer rancher and native Nevadan, was

1-4 born on December 9, 1902, in Dayton, to Guilio and Theresa Teglia, Italian

1-5 immigrants; and

1-6 Whereas, As a child, Roger Teglia attended Dayton School and

1-7 worked on the family ranch located on the Carson River until 1920 when

1-8 the Teglia family moved to Sparks and purchased land on Sullivan Lane to

1-9 continue the family ranching business; and

2-1 Whereas, In the 1930s, Roger Teglia established the first poultry

2-2 processing and wholesale business and the first wholesale frozen food

2-3 business in Northern Nevada; and

2-4 Whereas, Roger Teglia’s conservation ethic led him to found the

2-5 Nevada Fish and Game Association in 1932, the group which later created

2-6 legislation that was passed in 1947 establishing what is now the Division of

2-7 Wildlife of the State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources;

2-8 and

2-9 Whereas, Roger Teglia introduced chukar partridge to Nevada in 1934

2-10 and established pheasant, chukar and fish planting programs statewide; and

2-11 Whereas, Though Roger Teglia would be the first to admit he did not

2-12 accomplish his many endeavors alone, it is true, nonetheless, that he did

2-13 more to establish and develop wild gamebird populations, wetlands and

2-14 recreation areas in Nevada than any other person before or since; and

2-15 Whereas, The results of Roger Teglia’s efforts can be seen everywhere

2-16 today, from Lake Mead to the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge, from Virginia

2-17 Lake Park in Reno to Paradise Lake in Sparks, and in the chukar

2-18 populations that now inhabit all the western states; and

2-19 Whereas, Roger Teglia served his community as a Commissioner on

2-20 the Regional Planning Commission in Washoe County for 10 years,

2-21 including as Chairman from 1966 to 1969, as Republican National Finance

2-22 Chairman for Nevada in the 1950s and early 1960s, on the City of Reno

2-23 Housing Authority for 12 years, on the State Board of Forestry and Fire

2-24 Control for 5 years and on the Washoe County Board of Adjustment for

2-25 many years; and

2-26 Whereas, Over the years, Roger Teglia received commendations and

2-27 letters of thanks from a long list of admirers, including Presidents

2-28 Eisenhower, Bush and Reagan, Interior Secretary McKay, United States

2-29 Senators Pittman, McCarran, Laxalt and Bryan, and Governors Pittman,

2-30 Russell and List; and

2-31 Whereas, Roger Teglia is survived by his wife, Ruth, a son, Wayne,

2-32 and a daughter, Linda Forman, all of Sparks, sons, Dave of Santa Rosa,

2-33 California, Dan of Los Angeles, California, and many more loving family

2-34 members; now, therefore, be it

2-35 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-36 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-37 Legislature do hereby extend their sincere condolences to the family and

2-38 friends of this native Nevadan who truly loved and honored his state; and

2-39 be it further

2-40 Resolved, That Nevadans will long remember Roger Teglia for the

2-41 thoughtful and valuable contributions he offered the State of Nevada

2-42 throughout his life especially in the area of wildlife conservation; and be it

2-43 further

3-1 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

3-2 of this resolution to Roger Teglia’s loving wife, Ruth, and his children,

3-3 Wayne, Linda, Dave and Dan.
