SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONRecognizing the 100th anniversary of the

Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

1-1 Whereas, The United States of America, born in the fires of a

1-2 revolution and tempered by civil wars and foreign conflicts, today

1-3 embodies the highest ideals of freedom and democracy; and

1-4 Whereas, For over 200 years, millions of Americans have answered

1-5 our nation’s call to defend our freedoms and our democratic form of

1-6 government against all enemies; and

1-7 Whereas, Such service has required sacrifice, hardship, endurance,

1-8 dedication, bravery, courage and the highest level of patriotism, and those

1-9 who have served our country deserve special attention; and

2-1 Whereas, In 1899, the veterans of the Spanish-American War and the

2-2 Philippine Insurrection founded local organizations to secure the rights and

2-3 benefits afforded to all veterans for their service to this country; and

2-4 Whereas, These local organizations merged, creating the Veterans of

2-5 Foreign Wars of the United States, commonly known as VFW, and the

2-6 Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW; and

2-7 Whereas, Today there are more than 10,000 VFW Posts worldwide

2-8 with over two million members whose motto is, "We’d do anything for this

2-9 country"; and

2-10 Whereas, The VFW assists veterans and their families by providing

2-11 information concerning federal, state and local government programs,

2-12 fighting for job rights, educational benefits and improved medical care, and

2-13 through such programs as the VFW Citizenship Education program, the

2-14 VFW National Security and Foreign Affairs program and the VFW

2-15 National Home for Veterans’ Children; and

2-16 Whereas, The VFW’s commitment to youth is evidenced through its

2-17 support of various youth organizations and its Voice of Democracy

2-18 Scholarship program which annually provides over $2 million in

2-19 scholarships to high school students; and

2-20 Whereas, The VFW provides veterans and their families the

2-21 opportunity to take part in building a better America through such

2-22 community service projects as fund raisers for the sick and homeless,

2-23 carnivals for children, disaster relief, support for local schools, erecting

2-24 military memorials, placing flags on veterans’ graves, volunteering in

2-25 veterans’ hospitals and caring for the elderly, to name a few; and

2-26 Whereas, For 100 years, the VFW has continued to grow in strength,

2-27 power and influence, and today ranks as the 16th most powerful

2-28 membership organization in the country in getting things done for its

2-29 members and for the nation, a distinction which also identifies the VFW as

2-30 being the nation’s leading organization for its veterans; now, therefore, be it

2-31 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-32 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-33 Legislature hereby recognize the 100th anniversary of the Veterans of

2-34 Foreign Wars of the United States; and be it further

2-35 Resolved, That the men and women who paid for the freedom all of us

2-36 enjoy today are commended for their service, dedication and commitment

2-37 to this country and their fellow man; and be it further

2-38 Resolved, That the schools, businesses, churches, civic organizations

2-39 and residents of the State of Nevada are hereby urged to proudly display

2-40 the flag of the United States of America and to participate in programs

2-41 honoring the Veterans of Foreign Wars and all 26 million veterans of the

2-42 United States military; and be it further

3-1 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

3-2 of this resolution to the VFW State Commander.
