SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONMemorializing Nevada artist and public servant

Thelma Davis Calhoun.

1-1 Whereas, On October 25, 1998, the residents of the State of Nevada

1-2 lost a gifted artist and dedicated servant of the state with the passing of

1-3 Thelma Davis Calhoun; and

1-4 Whereas, Thelma Davis Calhoun was born in Warren, Ohio, on August

1-5 19, 1913, to Grant and Mary Davis and received her education in Ohio

1-6 before moving to Nevada with her husband, Jim Calhoun, in 1940; and

1-7 Whereas, Some of the varied positions held by this multi-talented

1-8 woman included Secretary to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction

2-1 in 1945, Administrative Assistant to the Director of Indian Education from

2-2 1947 to 1948, Research Assistant in the newly established Legislative

2-3 Counsel Bureau from 1948 to 1954 and Deputy United States Marshal from

2-4 1957 to 1960, for which she proudly toted a gun; and

2-5 Whereas, In 1966, Thelma Calhoun was elected to the Carson City

2-6 Council which at that time was working on the difficult and complex task of

2-7 consolidation of Carson City and Ormsby County and was later elected to

2-8 the Carson City Board of Supervisors where she served as Mayor Pro

2-9 Tempore from 1977 to 1978; and

2-10 Whereas, In addition to numerous other awards, Thelma Calhoun

2-11 received the Distinguished Nevadan Award from the University of Nevada

2-12 in 1978 and was named Woman of the Year in 1979 by the Carson City

2-13 Chamber of Commerce; and

2-14 Whereas, Thelma Calhoun’s strength and determination were evident

2-15 in the tenacious drive which resulted in legislation that created the Nevada

2-16 State Council on the Arts, now the State Arts Council, and it was the same

2-17 dedication that led to the procurement of a public works grant for the

2-18 establishment of the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City, which owes its

2-19 existence in great part to her efforts; and

2-20 Whereas, Creativity was a fundamental part of her life, and as an artist,

2-21 the legacy of Thelma Calhoun lives on in a sizeable body of paintings,

2-22 drawings and prints, including her accurately detailed depictions of many

2-23 historic buildings in Carson City and Virginia City; and

2-24 Whereas, Her artwork was characterized by careful attention to detail,

2-25 a sound sense of composition and lively color, as evidenced in the piece

2-26 which graced the cover of the Nevada Bell telephone directory for Reno’s

2-27 Centennial Year in 1968 and other pieces which can now be found, among

2-28 other places, in the Carson City Community Center and the Brewery Arts

2-29 Center and on the cover of the Political History of Nevada, 1996, Tenth

2-30 Edition; and

2-31 Whereas, Thelma Calhoun is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ariaz

2-32 of Reno, her son, James Grant Calhoun of Carson City, five grandchildren

2-33 and ten great-grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

2-34 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-35 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada

2-36 Legislature express their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the

2-37 versatile Thelma Davis Calhoun; and be it further

2-38 Resolved, That the artwork and other civic achievements of Thelma

2-39 Davis Calhoun visible in the State of Nevada will always serve as a

2-40 reminder of her devotion to Nevada and the many ways she so generously

2-41 and wholeheartedly served the residents of this state; and be it further

3-1 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

3-2 of this resolution to Thelma Calhoun’s daughter, Patricia Ariaz, and her

3-3 son, James Grant Calhoun.
