SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONCommending Operation Godspeed.

1-1 Whereas, Operation Godspeed was an idea conceived by Boulder City

1-2 resident Christine Combs Milburn whose goal was to display the United

1-3 States flag on every home and business in Boulder City in support of our

1-4 troops during the Persian Gulf War; and

1-5 Whereas, Operation Godspeed became a nonprofit organization that

1-6 incorporated in March 1991 as an organization to support the veterans of

1-7 all wars; and

1-8 Whereas, The Executive Board Members of Operation Godspeed are

1-9 volunteers from all walks of life who are united by their common

1-10 philosophy of old-fashioned patriotism and a commitment to honor those

1-11 who serve and have served in the Armed Services of the United States; and

2-1 Whereas, The money raised from flag sales, fund-raisers and donations

2-2 has brought their philosophy alive in many ways, including purchasing a

2-3 riding lawnmower and acquiring a backhoe for the Southern Nevada

2-4 Veterans Memorial Cemetery and funding the "God Bless All Veterans"

2-5 monument located at that cemetery; and

2-6 Whereas, Other patriotic activities of Operation Godspeed included

2-7 sponsoring an "Up With People" concert and the first "God Bless All

2-8 Veterans" Memorial Day parade in Boulder City, and arranging for the

2-9 Moving Wall, a one-half scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in

2-10 Washington, D.C., to be brought to Boulder City; and

2-11 Whereas, Operation Godspeed was nominated and recognized by

2-12 former President George Bush as one of the nation’s "Thousand Points of

2-13 Light"; and

2-14 Whereas, Operation Godspeed recognized a need to build an interfaith

2-15 chapel at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, which is the

2-16 second most utilized state veterans’ cemetery in the nation but presently has

2-17 no facility for the protection of family and visitors from the elements; and

2-18 Whereas, Operation Godspeed engaged in fundraising for a $1.2

2-19 million interfaith chapel created and designed by Mr. Ken Horak, Architect

2-20 and Executive Board Member of Operation Godspeed; and

2-21 Whereas, Operation Godspeed hosted a kick-off campaign in February

2-22 1997 in conjunction with veterans’ organizations throughout the Southern

2-23 Nevada area spotlighting the need for the chapel and introducing the "Walk

2-24 of Life" and "Wall of Life" paver campaign; and

2-25 Whereas, As of April 1999, Operation Godspeed has accomplished its

2-26 goal in raising $600,000 in private donations and in cooperation with the

2-27 State of Nevada and the Federal State Cemetery Grant Program has

2-28 scheduled the opening of bids for the first week in May of 1999 with

2-29 construction to start shortly thereafter; and

2-30 Whereas, Over the course of the next 9 months, construction will be

2-31 ongoing with completion slated for February 2000;

2-32 Whereas, Through the diligent efforts of the members of Operation

2-33 Godspeed and the civic and business community of Southern Nevada, a

2-34 nondenominational chapel will adorn the grounds of the Southern Nevada

2-35 Veterans Memorial Cemetery; now, therefore, be it

2-36 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-37 Concurring, That the members of the 70th session of the Nevada
