SENATE JOINT RESOLUTIONExpressing support for and the desire to cooperate with

the Federal Government in its research of safety requirements for the transmutation and

storage of high-level nuclear waste in a proposed nuclear repository in the State of

Nevada.

1-1 Whereas, The United States of America has numerous nuclear

1-2 electrical generation power plants and a naval force powered by nuclear

1-3 energy; and

1-4 Whereas, The use of nuclear energy will provide clean, efficient and

1-5 safe methods for protecting the welfare and defense of the United States

1-6 into the next century; and

1-7 Whereas, The spent fuel rods must be safely stored in a remote area

1-8 with low population, preferably on public lands; and

1-9 Whereas, Nevada meets those requirements and currently is the only

1-10 state under consideration as a site for a nuclear repository; and

1-11 Whereas, The State of Nevada also faces the political disadvantage of

1-12 having only four members in Congress to represent the best interests of

1-13 this state; now, therefore, be it

1-14 Resolved by the Senate and Assembly of the State of Nevada,

1-15 Jointly, That the members of the Nevada Legislature do hereby support

1-16 and desire to cooperate with the Department of Energy while it researches

1-17 the safety requirements for the transmutation and storage of high-level

1-18 nuclear waste in a repository located in the State of Nevada; and be it

1-19 further

2-1 Resolved, That the benefits that could accrue to the State of Nevada,

2-2 including additional land grants, water allocations and monetary

2-3 allocations from a fund for nuclear repository fees, must be considered by

2-4 the members of the Nevada Legislature; and be it further

2-5 Resolved, That this resolution becomes effective upon passage.
