SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION—Expressing support for and the desire to cooperate with
the Federal Government in its research of safety requirements for the transmutation and
storage of high-level nuclear waste in a proposed nuclear repository in the State of
Nevada.

Whereas, The United States of America has numerous nuclear1-2
electrical generation power plants and a naval force powered by nuclear1-3
energy; and1-4
Whereas, The use of nuclear energy will provide clean, efficient and1-5
safe methods for protecting the welfare and defense of the United States1-6
into the next century; and1-7
Whereas, The spent fuel rods must be safely stored in a remote area1-8
with low population, preferably on public lands; and1-9
Whereas, Nevada meets those requirements and currently is the only1-10
state under consideration as a site for a nuclear repository; and1-11
Whereas, The State of Nevada also faces the political disadvantage of1-12
having only four members in Congress to represent the best interests of1-13
this state; now, therefore, be it1-14
Resolved by the Senate and Assembly of the State of Nevada,1-15
Jointly, That the members of the Nevada Legislature do hereby support1-16
and desire to cooperate with the Department of Energy while it researches1-17
the safety requirements for the transmutation and storage of high-level1-18
nuclear waste in a repository located in the State of Nevada; and be it1-19
further2-1
Resolved, That the benefits that could accrue to the State of Nevada,2-2
including additional land grants, water allocations and monetary2-3
allocations from a fund for nuclear repository fees, must be considered by2-4
the members of the Nevada Legislature; and be it further2-5
Resolved, That this resolution becomes effective upon passage.~
