AN ACT relating to courts; increasing the number of district judges in the eighth judicial district; increasing the number of those district judges who must be judges of the family court; making an appropriation; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1    Section 1.  NRS 3.018 is hereby amended to read as follows:

1-2    3.018  For the eighth judicial district there must be [30] 35 district

1-3  judges, [11] 12 of whom must be judges of the family court.

1-4    Sec. 2.  The additional district judges required for the eighth judicial

1-5  district pursuant to section 1 of this act must be selected at the general

1-6  election held on November 5, 2002, and take office on January 6, 2003.

1-7  The terms of these judges expire on January 2, 2009.

1-8    Sec. 3.  1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state general fund

1-9  to the district judges’ salary account the sum of $332,500 for the salaries of

1-10  the additional district judges required pursuant to section 1 of this act.

1-11    2.  Any remaining balance of the appropriation made by subsection 1

1-12  must not be committed for expenditure after June 30, 2003, and reverts to

1-13  the state general fund as soon as all payments of money committed have

1-14  been made.


2-1    Sec. 4.  The provisions of subsection 1 of NRS 354.599 do not apply

2-2  to any additional expenses of a local government that are related to the

2-3  provisions of this act.

2-4    Sec. 5.  1.  This section and sections 2 and 4 of this act become

2-5  effective on October 1, 2001.

2-6    2.  Sections 1 and 3 of this act become effective on January 6, 2003.
