AN ACT making an appropriation to the University and Community College System of Nevada to provide assistance to university students who are single parents with low incomes; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1    Section 1.  1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state general

1-2  fund to the University and Community College System of Nevada the sum

1-3  of $600,000 for the provision of assistance to students enrolled in a

1-4  university of the System who are single parents with low incomes.

1-5    2.  The money appropriated by subsection 1:

1-6    (a) Must be expended only to provide qualified students with assistance

1-7  in meeting the expenses required to complete their higher education, which

1-8  may include, without limitation:

1-9       (1) Financial assistance with or the direct provision of child care,

1-10  transportation, tuition and books and other educational materials; and

1-11      (2) The provision of paid internships and opportunities to engage in

1-12  programs that combine paid work and study.

1-13    (b) Must be allocated equally between qualified students enrolled in the

1-14  University of Nevada, Reno, and qualified students enrolled in the

1-15  University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

1-16    3.  Any remaining balance of the appropriation made by subsection 1

1-17  must not be committed for expenditure after June 30, 2003, and reverts to


2-1  the state general fund as soon as all payments of money committed have

2-2  been made.

2-3    Sec. 2.  On or before February 1, 2003, the Board of Regents of the

2-4  University of Nevada shall submit a report on the use of the money

2-5  appropriated by section 1 of this act to the Director of the Legislative

2-6  Counsel Bureau for transmittal to:

2-7    1.  The Senate Standing Committee on Finance; and

2-8    2.  The Assembly Standing Committee on Ways and Means.

2-9    Sec. 3.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
