AN ACT relating to highways; requiring the department of transportation to establish along certain highways a system of communication for members of the general public to report emergencies and receive information concerning conditions for driving on those highways; making an appropriation; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

   Section 1. NRS 408.569 is hereby amended to read as follows:

   408.569  The department [may] shall establish along [the most] one or

 more frequently traveled highways of this state a system of [telephones]

 communication for members of the general public to report fires,

 accidents or other emergencies [or] and to receive information concerning

 the conditions for driving on certain highways.

   Sec. 2.  1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state highway fund

 to the department of transportation the sum of $500,000 for the

 establishment and maintenance of an emergency system of call boxes

 located on Interstate Highway No. 15 from the boundary of the State of

 California to Lake Mead Drive in Clark County, Nevada.

   2.  Any remaining balance of the appropriation made by subsection 1

 must not be committed for expenditure after June 30, 2003, and reverts to

 the state highway fund as soon as all payments of money committed have

 been made.

   Sec. 3.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
