Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing long-time educator and native Nevadan, Orsie S.Graves.

 

1-1    Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature were deeply

1-2  saddened by the passing of Orsie S. Graves on May 10, 2000, one of

1-3  Sparks High School’s most influential educators; and

1-4    Whereas, Orsie S. Graves, a native Nevadan, was born on March 15,

1-5  1922, in Sparks, to Orsie M. and Pearl (Casey) Graves; and

1-6    Whereas, Orsie Graves graduated from Sparks High School in 1940

1-7  and later joined the United States Army Air Corps where he served his

1-8  country during World War II as a pilot; and

1-9    Whereas, In 1948, Orsie Graves earned his Bachelor’s Degree from

1-10  the University of Nevada and continued his education by attending classes

1-11  at San Jose State University and the University of Nevada where he

1-12  received his Master’s Degree in 1965; and


2-1    Whereas, Following college and his service in the military, Orsie

2-2  Graves taught in junior high schools in Fallon and Sparks before becoming

2-3  a teacher and basketball coach at Sparks High School in 1956; and

2-4    Whereas, During his 12 years as basketball coach at Sparks High

2-5  School, Orsie Graves earned a reputation as a tough and talented coach

2-6  who encouraged his players to excel in the classroom, as well as on the

2-7  court; and

2-8    Whereas, After leaving his coaching days behind, Orsie Graves

2-9  continued his career in education for another 17 years as Acting Vice

2-10  Principal, Dean of Students and Vice Principal at Sparks High School

2-11  where he touched the lives of a generation of students and encouraged

2-12  them to be the best that they could be; and

2-13    Whereas, Following his retirement from the Washoe County School

2-14  District in 1985, Orsie Graves and his wife, Lois, devoted a considerable

2-15  amount of time and energy toward the development of the Sparks Heritage

2-16  Museum; and

2-17    Whereas, The love and respect that Orsie Graves received from his

2-18  students was expressed simply by the Mayor of the City of Sparks, Tony

2-19  Armstrong, a former student of Graves, who was quoted as saying, “I was

2-20  one of those students who you had to take a 2-by-4 and hit me in the head

2-21  to make me understand. Orsie was one of those who picked up that 2-by-4.

2-22  He never gave up on me and spent a lot a time with me.”; and

2-23    Whereas, Orsie Graves is survived by his wife, Lois, son, Brad,

2-24  daughters, Tricia Grinsell and Leslie Moya, and sister, Bonnie Pettengill,

2-25  all of Reno, son, Ed Henrickson of Hawaii, and seven grandchildren; now,

2-26  therefore, be it

2-27    Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-28  Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada

2-29  Legislature do hereby extend their sincere condolences to the family and

2-30  friends of Orsie S. Graves; and be it further

2-31    Resolved, That Orsie Graves will long be remembered for his

2-32  contribution to education and athletics at Sparks High School and for the

2-33  compassion and understanding that he generously gave to his students and

2-34  friends throughout his life; and be it further

2-35    Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit

2-36  a copy of this resolution to Orsie Graves’ loving wife, Lois.
