Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing former Assemblyman John Frank Giomi.

 

1-1    Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature note with sadness

1-2  the passing of native Nevadan and former Assemblyman, John Frank

1-3  Giomi, on June 17, 2000; and

1-4    Whereas, Born in Mason Valley on March 6, 1917, to Frank and

1-5  Cherubina Bennetti Giomi and remaining a lifetime resident of Lyon

1-6  County, John Giomi attended rural schools in the valley and graduated

1-7  from Yerington High School; and

1-8    Whereas, After graduating from the University of Nevada in 1941

1-9  with a degree in agriculture, John Giomi was employed with the United

1-10  States Soil Conservation Service until he was drafted into the United States

1-11  Army in 1942; and

1-12    Whereas, During his time with the military, John Giomi fought in the

1-13  Battle of the Bulge, was taken prisoner, later to be liberated by the English,

1-14  and was honorably discharged from the service in 1945; and


2-1    Whereas, Upon his return to Nevada, John Giomi and his brother, Joe,

2-2  purchased the Central Mercantile in Smith Valley and, after selling the

2-3  store in 1954 but retaining the equipment portion of the business, John

2-4  opened Ace Hardware in Yerington in 1969 which he operated along with

2-5  several family members until his retirement in 1995; and

2-6    Whereas, John Giomi’s dedication to serving the residents of Lyon

2-7  County found expression in many ways, including 25 years of service as a

2-8  volunteer fireman as well as service on the District Fire Board, the Lyon

2-9  County Drug and Alcohol Council, the Yerington Senior Center Board and

2-10  the Lyon County Draft Board; and

2-11    Whereas, Other community involvement by John Giomi included

2-12  teaching agriculture to returning World War II veterans, coaching Little

2-13  League baseball, membership in the Yerington and Smith Valley Rotary

2-14  Clubs, and 52 years of service as a member of the Veterans of Foreign

2-15  Wars; and

2-16    Whereas, John Giomi was elected to the Nevada State Assembly in

2-17  1954 and represented the residents of Lyon County for seven regular

2-18  legislative sessions and three special legislative sessions until he was

2-19  succeeded by Joseph E. Dini, Jr., in 1967; and

2-20    Whereas, During his years of service in the Nevada State Assembly,

2-21  John Giomi served on numerous committees, including the Education

2-22  Committee, the Fish and Game Committee, the Legislative Functions

2-23  Committee, the Livestock Committee, the Mines, Mining and Public Lands

2-24  Committee, the Roads, Transportation and Aviation Committee, the Social

2-25  Welfare Committee, the Taxation Committee, the Veterans’ Affairs

2-26  Committee and, most notably, the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee,

2-27  serving as its Chairman in 1955, 1959, 1960, 1963 and 1965; and

2-28    Whereas, As an Assemblyman, John Giomi introduced and was

2-29  instrumental in gaining passage of legislation on a variety of issues,

2-30  including agricultural chemical regulation, livestock, federal water rights,

2-31  veterans’ affairs and education funding; and

2-32    Whereas, John Giomi is survived by his wife, Jere, daughter, Patti

2-33  Dohoney, and son, Joe, all of Yerington, son, John of Fallbrook, California,

2-34  brother, Joe of Smith Valley, and four grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

2-35    Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-36  Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada

2-37  Legislature express their heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of

2-38  former Assemblyman John Frank Giomi; and be it further

2-39    Resolved, That John Giomi will long be remembered for his rich

2-40  legacy of service to the people of Lyon County and to the State of Nevada;

2-41  and be it further

2-42    Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit

2-43  a copy of this resolution to Jere, John Giomi’s beloved wife of 50 years.
