Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing Julian Wallace.

 

   Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature note with sadness the passing of Julian Wallace on August 2, 2000; and

1-1    Whereas, Julian Walter Wallace was born on September 13, 1912, in

1-2  Brooklyn, New York; and

1-3    Whereas, After moving to California, Julian Wallace met Lillian

1-4  Kramer, the woman he would marry on January 17, 1948, and who would

1-5  become his partner in every endeavor from that day forward; and

1-6    Whereas, With their move to Nevada in 1978, Julian and Lillian

1-7  Wallace brought with them their deep involvement in various

1-8  organizations, including Julian’s membership in the Fraternal Order of

1-9  Knights of Pythias, an international fraternity in which Julian served as

1-10  Chancellor Commander and whose principles of friendship, charity and

1-11  benevolence he incorporated into his daily life; and

1-12    Whereas, Lifetime members of the City of Hope, Julian and Lillian

1-13  Wallace worked as volunteers in many projects initiated to raise money for

1-14  the life-saving work of the City of Hope National Medical Center whose


2-1  mission is the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer and other life-

2-2  threatening diseases through innovative research and patient care; and

2-3    Whereas, Active with the Mobile Homeowners League of the Silver

2-4  State, Julian Wallace became its Executive Vice President in 1982, and it

2-5  was as a representative of this organization that he became involved with

2-6  Seniors United, a coalition of senior citizen activist groups formed during

2-7  the election year of 1982 to win election for candidates who supported their

2-8  views; and

2-9    Whereas, While many of the senior groups dissolved after the election,

2-10  Julian and Lillian Wallace felt that an organization with the potential of

2-11  Seniors United should not be discarded and took over the leadership which

2-12  they would retain for the next 17 years, changing its focus to a political

2-13  education organization dedicated to developing the political knowledge of

2-14  seniors with forums for discussions and presentations of topical issues

2-15  while challenging the members to recognize the strength of their collective

2-16  voting power; and

2-17    Whereas, The team of Julian and Lillian Wallace has received

2-18  numerous honors and awards for their achievements while directing the

2-19  course of Seniors United including a recognition by Senator Harry Reid

2-20  recorded in the Congressional Record of November 7, 1997, in which he

2-21  paid tribute to “two Nevadans whose lives serve as an inspiration not only

2-22  to all Nevadans but to this Nation and to this distinguished body” and he

2-23  noted further that they “never hesitate to hold their elected officials’ feet to

2-24  the fire and demonstrate on a daily basis that an active and involved

2-25  citizenry is definitely not a function of age.”; and

2-26    Whereas, Never one to take retirement as a time to slow down, Julian

2-27  Wallace also served on the Clark County Parks and Recreation Board, was

2-28  active with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and was a delegate

2-29  to the 1995 White House Conference on Aging, which was followed by a

2-30  special invitation to the 1997 presidential inauguration; and

2-31    Whereas, The cheerful, positive demeanor and the ever-present smile

2-32  of Julian Wallace will be missed by those who knew him and were drawn

2-33  by the magnetic personality that made him irresistible to people of all ages;

2-34  and

2-35    Whereas, Julian Wallace is survived by his wife, Lillian, who said of

2-36  their 52 1/2 years together that “we enjoyed every minute of it,” and by his

2-37  brothers, Theodore of Los Angeles, California, and Martin Rock of

2-38  Scottsdale, Arizona; now, therefore, be it

2-39    Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

2-40  Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada

2-41  Legislature extend their sincere condolences to Lillian Wallace on the loss

2-42  of her loving husband and closest friend; and be it further

2-43    Resolved, That Julian Wallace will long be remembered for his

2-44  commitment to the Phythian principles of “service to mankind” and “peace

2-45  through understanding” and as a man who made everyone his friend; and

2-46  be it further

 

 


3-1    Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit

3-2  a copy of this resolution to Lillian, his beloved wife and partner for over

3-3  half a century.
