Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing former Assemblyman and philanthropist Harold E.Fitz.
1-1 Whereas, The members of the 71st session of the Nevada Legislature
1-2 join the residents of Churchill County and many others in remembering the
1-3 life and mourning the loss of former Assemblyman Harold E. Fitz; and
1-4 Whereas, Harold E. Fitz was born on August 7, 1902, in DeWitt,
1-5 Michigan, to Victor and Lydia Fitz, and was just 2 years of age when his
1-6 parents homesteaded in Stillwater, Nevada; and
1-7 Whereas, After graduating from Stillwater School, Harold Fitz worked
1-8 on his family’s farm and in the Virginia City and Silver City mines before
1-9 leaving for Los Angeles to work for the city’s survey division; and
1-10 Whereas, Harold Fitz attended night school to become a registered
1-11 surveyor and used that knowledge in the years following as a foreman for
1-12 the Civilian Conservation Corps, as a surveyor for the Navy at the Naval
1-13 Auxiliary Air Station Fallon and the Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot,
1-14 and in his job with the Andy Drumm Construction Company; and
2-1 Whereas, On September 18, 1928, Harold Fitz married Catherine
2-2 Amelia Lerch, whom he called “my little Susie,” which was subsequently
2-3 shortened to “Suse,” and who would be his loving companion for the next
2-4 72 years; and
2-5 Whereas, In 1929, Harold and Catherine Fitz purchased a wheat farm
2-6 near his family homestead and, in the 1940s, bought several other ranches
2-7 in Churchill County; and
2-8 Whereas, Harold and Catherine Fitz were generous philanthropists
2-9 who created perpetual scholarships at the University of Nevada, Reno, and
2-10 Western Nevada Community College and gave to various organizations
2-11 and causes including the Shriners Hospital in Sacramento, the Churchill
2-12 County Museum, the Alzheimer research program at the University of
2-13 Nevada, Reno, and four Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders
2-14 Clinics in Northern Nevada; and
2-15 Whereas, Always looking for ways to help the hard-working farmers
2-16 of the area, Harold Fitz was a leader in the local soil conservation program
2-17 and the Stillwater Farm Bureau and was instrumental in the purchase of
2-18 large farm equipment from the Federal Government that could be used by
2-19 participants of the soil conservation program; and
2-20 Whereas, Harold Fitz found many ways to be involved with his
2-21 community, which included being a Master Mason for 72 years, a member
2-22 of the Scottish Rite Masonic Order for 50 years, a member of the Kerak
2-23 Shrine and Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee of Churchill
2-24 County; and
2-25 Whereas, In 1958, Harold Fitz was appointed to fill a vacancy in the
2-26 Assembly for the special session held that year and was elected to serve
2-27 another term in 1959, and during these years his expertise was valuable on
2-28 several committees including Agriculture and Irrigation, State Libraries,
2-29 Livestock, Military and Indian Affairs, and Ways and Means; and
2-30 Whereas, A man of many talents and interests, Harold Fitz enjoyed
2-31 traveling, reading, fishing and hunting and was a championship marksman
2-32 with the Nevada State Rifle Team; and
2-33 Whereas, In 1998, Harold and Catherine Fitz were presented with
2-34 honorary associate degrees by Western Nevada Community College to
2-35 acknowledge their contributions to higher education in Nevada; and
2-36 Whereas, Harold Fitz’s keen mind, generous spirit and zest for life
2-37 will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, especially his
2-38 wife, Catherine “Suse,” of Fallon, his son, Robert, and daughter, Ruth
2-39 Pintar, both of Carson City, his brother, George of Yerington, and his 6
2-40 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
2-41 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate
2-42 Concurring, That the Nevada Legislature extends its deepest sympathy
2-43 to the family and friends of Harold Fitz; and be it further
2-44 Resolved, That the gazebo erected by Harold and Catherine Fitz in
2-45 Laura Mills Park in Fallon will be a reminder of the generosity of a man
2-46 whose desire to help others found expression in numerous ways throughout
2-47 his life; and be it further
3-1 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit
3-2 a copy of this resolution to his wife of 72 years, Catherine “Suse” Fitz.
