Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Designating April 28, 2001, as Workers Memorial Day in Nevada.
1-1 Whereas, Since 1989, April 28 has been observed as Workers
1-2 Memorial Day by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of
1-3 Industrial Organizations; and
1-4 Whereas, This date is significant in that it is the anniversary of the
1-5 enactment of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, and trade
1-6 unionists around the globe now mark April 28 as an “International Day of
1-7 Mourning”; and
1-8 Whereas, Workers Memorial Day is not only a time to remember the
1-9 workers who have succumbed to an occupational disease or been injured or
1-10 killed on the job, but a time to renew the commitment to prevent these
1-11 tragedies in the future by supporting needed protections and defending the
1-12 promise of safe jobs for all workers; and
1-13 Whereas, The theme for Workers Memorial Day for this year is
1-14 “Mourn for the Dead. Fight for the Living. Stop the Pain”; and
2-1 Whereas, Decades of struggle by workers and their unions have
2-2 resulted in significant improvements in working conditions, but the toll of
2-3 workplace injuries, illness and deaths remains too high as, each year, more
2-4 than 60,000 workers die from job-related injuries and illnesses and another
2-5 6 million are injured; and
2-6 Whereas, Too often these tragedies and the devastation they cause for
2-7 these workers, their families and co-workers are quickly forgotten; now,
2-9 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate
2-10 Concurring, That the 71st session of the Nevada Legislature hereby
2-11 designates April 28, 2001, as Workers Memorial Day, a day to honor and
2-12 remember the workers who have succumbed to occupational diseases or
2-13 been injured or killed as a result of work-related accidents; and be it further
2-14 Resolved, That the residents of the State of Nevada are hereby urged
2-15 to observe this day by recognizing the need for strengthening safety and
2-16 health protections in the workplace so that future workplace tragedies can
2-17 be prevented.
