Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Designating May 20 through May 26, 2001, as U.S. Merchant Marine and U.S. Navy Armed Guard Remembrance Week.
1-1 Whereas, The U.S. Merchant Marine has faithfully served our country
1-2 in times of war and peace, transporting troops, weaponry, supplies and
1-3 equipment to every corner of the world; and
1-4 Whereas, The Merchant Marine has helped win wars and maintain
1-5 peace by providing necessary materials, food and supplies to assist many
1-6 other nations in rebuilding their countries and economies; and
1-7 Whereas, During World War II, the Merchant Marine transported
1-8 troops and delivered 75 percent of all military equipment and supplies to
1-9 battle fronts throughout the world in the face of attacks by the enemy and
1-10 violent seas, without the benefit of sonar equipment to enable them to
1-11 detect the enemy; and
1-12 Whereas, Of the relatively small volunteer force of about 250,000
1-13 during World War II, at least 8,651 Merchant Mariners were killed at sea,
2-1 over 11,000 were wounded with 1,100 dying from wounds, and 604 were
2-2 taken as prisoners of war of whom 61 died in POW camps; and
2-3 Whereas, For their heroic efforts during World War II, President
2-4 Franklin Delano Roosevelt recognized the Merchant Mariners as an
2-5 essential part of the history of the country’s sea power and said the
2-6 Mariners “have written one of its most brilliant chapters. They have
2-7 delivered the goods when and where needed in every theater of operations
2-8 and across every ocean in the biggest, the most difficult and dangerous job
2-9 ever undertaken. As time goes on, there will be greater public
2-10 understanding of our merchant’s fleet record during this war”; and
2-11 Whereas, The U.S. Navy Armed Guard was established to protect the
2-12 Merchant Marine ships from enemy ships, aircraft and submarines by
2-13 providing gunnery protection and communication services; and
2-14 Whereas, Many of the members of the Navy Armed Guard had never
2-15 seen the ocean before being assigned to a Merchant Marine ship, yet they
2-16 served side-by-side with the Mariners under difficult and extremely
2-17 dangerous circumstances, often without a doctor on board the ship; and
2-18 Whereas, The U.S. Merchant Marine and the U.S. Navy Armed Guard
2-19 worked as a team to provide a vital link between our fighting forces
2-20 overseas and the home front, each suffering one of the highest ratios of
2-21 death among the armed services in World War II, with many being lost at
2-22 sea, their fates unknown; now, therefore, be it

2-28 observance, to coincide with National Maritime Day on May 22; and be it
2-29 further
2-30 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit
2-31 a copy of this resolution to Bill Erin, Secretary of the Las Vegas Chapter of
