ASSEMBLY Concurrent RESOLUTION—Recognizing May 16, 2001, as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in Nevada.
1-1 Whereas, Of all the promises America offers, none is more precious or
1-2 more elusive than the right to be free from crime and violence; and
1-3 Whereas, The dedicated men and women who have chosen law
1-4 enforcement as a career face extraordinary risk and danger in preserving
1-5 our freedom and security; and
1-6 Whereas, Seeing a need to honor those who died trying to make a safer
1-7 life for American citizens, on October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy
1-8 signed Public Law 87-726 designating National Police Week and
1-9 National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day; and
1-10 Whereas, In 1994, the United States Congress and President
1-11 William J. Clinton approved Public Law 103-322 directing that the flag of
1-12 the United States be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on
1-13 May 15 each year as a special tribute to the brave men and women who
1-14 died upholding our laws and preserving public safety; and
2-1 Whereas, This year marks the 13th annual candlelight vigil held at the
2-2 National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial in Washington, D.C.,
2-3 where, each year since 1982, thousands gather to salute all of America’s
2-4 law enforcement heroes, both past and present; and
2-5 Whereas, During the week of May 13 through May 19, 2001, National
2-6 Police Week will be observed throughout the nation to increase public
2-7 awareness of the duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices of our
2-8 nation’s peace officers and to provide the opportunity to appreciate the
2-9 heroic men and women who have dedicated their lives to preserving public
2-10 safety; and
2-11 Whereas, As part of the observance of National Police Week, May 16,
2-12 2001, has been designated as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in Nevada to
2-13 commemorate those noble officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in
2-14 service to their community; and
2-15 Whereas, The tragic loss felt when a peace officer is killed in the line
2-16 of duty is expressed in these poignant words from a poem by Harry Koch:
2-17 Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
2-18 It happened in your town or mine.
2-19 While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
2-20 A cop put his life on the line.
2-21 Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
2-22 And he stands at each new rookie’s side.
2-23 He answered the call and gave us his all,
2-24 And a part of America died.
2-26 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate
2-27 Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada
2-28 Legislature do hereby recognize May 16, 2001, as Peace Officers’
2-29 Memorial Day in the State of Nevada; and be it further
2-30 Resolved, That during the week of May 13 through May 19, 2001, all
2-31 residents of this state are urged to attend the ceremonies honoring those
2-32 persons who gave their lives while preserving our safety, and are
2-33 encouraged to express appreciation to those who continue to face death
2-34 every day in their dedication to making Nevada a safer place in which to
2-35 live.
