Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Encouraging the purchase of local agricultural products.

1-1    Whereas, Agriculture is one of Nevada’s most important industries,

1-2  providing a cornerstone for the economies of rural Nevada counties and the

1-3  state as a whole, and employing a large number of workers in our state; and

1-4    Whereas, Farming and ranching are an inherent part of our Western

1-5  culture and greatly enhance the aesthetics of life in Nevada; and

1-6    Whereas, With its vast mountains and rangelands providing grazing

1-7  for livestock, Nevada’s ranches rank third in the nation in size, with cattle

1-8  and calves being the leading agricultural industry in this state; and

1-9    Whereas, Some of the other livestock enterprises that add to the

1-10  agricultural industry are horses, sheep, lambs, hogs, pigs, rabbits, and

1-11  ducks, geese and other poultry, as well as more exotic livestock such as

1-12  emus and llamas; and

1-13    Whereas, Dairying and the manufacture of dairy products, as a part of

1-14  the agricultural industry, is growing as well; and

1-15    Whereas, Despite Nevada’s arid climate, with farms concentrated in

1-16  valleys where land can be properly irrigated, excellent crops are produced

1-17  such as potatoes, onions, garlic, melons, barley, wheat, corn, oats and, the

1-18  leading cash crop of the state, alfalfa hay; and

1-19    Whereas, The costs of production for the agricultural industry are

1-20  continually increasing, and there has been a sharp drop in net income from

1-21  farming and ranching in recent years; and

1-22    Whereas, Purchasers in this state could greatly benefit the agricultural

1-23  economy of this state by obtaining agricultural products from sources

1-24  within this state, to the extent that their needs can be met by these products;

1-25  now, therefore, be it

1-26    Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate

1-27  Concurring, That institutions, wholesalers and retailers in this state are

1-28  encouraged to purchase agricultural products that are grown, produced,

1-29  packed, processed or raised in the State of Nevada; and be it further

2-1    Resolved, That each regulatory agency of this state having the

2-2  appropriate powers is directed to foster the purchase and use of agricultural

2-3  products grown, produced, packed, processed or raised in this state; and be

2-4  it further

2-5    Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit

2-6  a copy of this resolution to each regulatory agency of this state that is able

2-7  to assist in carrying out the purposes of this resolution.
