Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Commending the National Association of Women in Construction and declaring March 4 through March 10, 2001, as Women in Construction Week in Nevada.
1-1 Whereas, The National Association of Women in Construction was
1-2 founded in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1955 and is an international association
1-3 that promotes and supports the advancement and employment of women in
1-4 the construction industry and currently serves approximately 6,500
1-5 members in more than 200 chapters in the United States and Canada, as
1-6 well as affiliates in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa; and
1-7 Whereas, The National Association of Women in Construction
1-8 Education Foundation offers certification programs, a wide range of
1-9 publications and training tools, home-study courses, and several programs
1-10 for children from kindergarten through twelfth grade that introduce
1-11 students to careers and opportunities in construction in a positive and fun
1-12 manner while presenting challenges in math, science and design; and
2-1 Whereas, The Founders’ Scholarship Foundation of the National
2-2 Association of Women in Construction awards scholarships each year to
2-3 students in college who are pursuing construction-related studies and in the
2-4 past 5 years has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships to both
2-5 female and male students; and
2-6 Whereas, The National Association of Women in Construction works
2-7 in partnership with other industry associations and governmental entities to
2-8 promote training among women in the skilled trades, to cooperate in
2-9 educational programs and to promote businesses owned by women; and
2-10 Whereas, The Crystal Vision Award of the National Association of
2-11 Women in Construction, according to Susan Levy, founder of the award
2-12 and past national President of the Association, “identifies and honors the
2-13 men and women who see beyond the invisible barriers that impede the
2-14 progress of women, especially in nontraditional fields,” and who
2-15 “demonstrate the courage to act on their vision by gradually breaking down
2-16 those barriers through policy change, setting precedent and taking risks”;
2-17 and
2-18 Whereas, Local chapters of the National Association of Women in
2-19 Construction are made up of enthusiastic women working in construction
2-20 who are excited about the industry and translate their enthusiasm into
2-21 involvement in various community projects; and
2-22 Whereas, The Las Vegas Chapter, Number 74, chartered in 1964, has
2-23 presented over $150,000 in scholarships to students in the Las Vegas area
2-24 and has more than 60 members who are active in education regarding the
2-25 construction industry and are working to raise awareness in the community
2-26 of the role of women in construction; and
2-27 Whereas, The Sparks Chapter, Number 361, chartered in July of 2000
2-28 with 31 members, is beginning their mission by recognizing the need to
2-29 embrace every opportunity to become a productive association for the
2-30 Reno-Sparks community; and
2-31 Whereas, The fourth annual Women in Construction Week, sponsored
2-32 by the National Association of Women in Construction is scheduled for
2-33 March 4-10, 2001, and is designed to recognize the strides and
2-34 contributions women have made in the construction industry, to increase
2-35 the visibility of women in this industry and to look ahead to further
2-36 realization of their potential in the future; and
2-37 Whereas, The theme of this year’s Women in Construction Week is
2-38 “Under Construction…Building for Tomorrow” and was selected to
2-39 describe the current status of women in the industry, to bring awareness to
2-40 the need for further advancement and acceptance, and to promote the
2-41 conviction that women are taking an active role in the industry by helping
2-42 to build the future; now, therefore, be it
2-43 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the Senate
2-44 Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada
2-45 Legislature do hereby commend the National Association of Women in
2-46 Construction for its efforts and programs that promote and support the
2-47 advancement, visibility and pride of women in the construction industry;
2-48 and be it further
3-1 Resolved, That March 4 through March 10, 2001, is hereby declared
3-2 as Women in Construction Week in Nevada; and be it further
3-3 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit
3-4 a copy of this resolution to Cindy Crawley, CIT, President of the National
3-5 Association of Women in Construction, Patricia Jacobs, President of Las
3-6 Vegas Chapter Number 74 and Anne Thompson, President of Sparks
3-7 Chapter Number 361.
